I have Norton 2005, and that jus murders my system, its so greedy!, and it is time to renew it,

Im looking at McAfee VirusScan 2006, is McAfee virus scan good?, does it slow your PC down to its knees like norton, and whats the available protection like, and compared to Norton.

Many thanks, im thinking of getting this, but if its system greedy, NO way!

In my opinion, every such program is gready when it comes to scans. However, you have to remember that it's a small price to pay when it comes to protection. I would rather lose a bit of system resource during a scan, than to lose my entire computer to an infestation just because I decided to rush a scan.

The best out there by far ........ and its recommended by the pros is AVG.FIND IT HERE. For personal use all you need is the free version.

No im not bothered about the scanning one bit, im interested in the REAL TIME scanner that works in the background, and im wondering if McAfee is system greedy like norton with there real time scanner.

oh, ummmm..the title of this thread threw me off for a minute.....

BUT anyways..I'm running macaffee (free from school) without really any noticeable changes...once inawhile when I'm flying or whatever I'll try disabling the scanning and what not and I never really see any big difference in performance. Much better than norton from my experiences.. Wink

I have been using Avast for over a year now, free for home users and free updates. I notice no major resource hogging and the scanning of email is quick and painless.

As for catching stuff, I had run Nortin and threw it out since it wanted to control my computer, installed Avast removed Norton and did a complete scan. Avast found 7 virus/trojan files hidden in the PC that Norton obviously overlooked it was then that I swore to never go to something that wants you to keep paying for it Wink

I have also tried the other freeware virus programs but Avast has been the best I have found and I plan on using it for as long as it is around or something better comes out.
Only thing that some dislike (why I don't know?) is you must register with Avast and this is done once a year upon doing so you get a years worth of program and virus database upgrades free, when a year is up you will be notified to register again then it is another year of virus free computing!

Protection from Norton ....... 50% I had the same problem as Politically Incorrect . Got rid of Norton ..... installed AVG and it found 5-6 viruses that Norton had Failed to find.
Norton even stops updating before the end of the first year.

Go with something free and simple to use. I don't know Avast so can't comment ...... as I've said I use AVG and have never had a problem with it.

I've got both free AGV and a registered version Norton "System Works".

The thing I like about Norton System Works are the Norton Utilities, with it's suite of programs for detecting and curing faults in the Windows directories, and making the hard drives more efficient, etc:
Optimise Performance.
Find and fix problems.
System Maintenance.

Other versions of Norton, and other Anti-virus programs don't seem to have these useful utilities incorporated...!

I run "Find and Fix Problems" before I shut down each night, and it's amazing how many problems it finds that I would not otherwise know about, and which would accumulate over time...!!

If you didn't know about it, or your computer showed no visable signs of a problem then is there really a problem to be fixed??
