Hi,

Is it possible to fly this aircraft, without using the FMC, and using autopilot 'normally'?

What i mean is being able to set my own speeds (using A/T), headings & altitudes controlled with fpm.

Many thanks,
Richard.

NB - Whenever i try to fly this aircraft as described above it always climbs way past the altitude i set and never turns headings, etc. BTW Do you press 'z' for the autopilot to engage?

Of course it's possible, heck the real aircraft is even certified to fly WITHOUT the FMC being operative  8)

Arm the A/T, dial in the desired speed and then push the "speed" button on the autopilot panel.

The autopilot is engaged by pressing either CMD A or B, either one will do the job, the 737 is equipped with dual autopilots.

It is, but I'd say its that you would get it for no?
Otherwise there are several freeware models such as
Moach's 737 Experience that will satisfy you just as much.
But the FMC isnt that hard to learn. The tutorial flight and
an hour or so of manual and you'll be planning SIDS and STARS in no time.  Wink

You should really take the time to learn the FMC. It will give you a much better experience, and you'll be that much wiser. Wink

Well, in fact I have gone through the manual and I have done a few flights using FMC. However I prefer FSNav even if it is not realistic. I guess it is all a matter of taste or I am fed up with black screens (I am a mainframe programmer). lol

I use FMC's on my planes that have them.  Why, I wonder when ATC vectors me anyway under IFR?  Most of the time I am flying on heading hold with the FMC un-coupled anyway.  I guess I do it just because I would if I were a realworld airline pilot.  I am sure they are quite fast and proficient at executing routing changes through their FMC's but the difference is they can reach right down and punch the keys.  No window to pop up, no mouse to operate with, they just reach and punch.  I should save up and get one of those cocpit builder FMC units that sync with FS-2004.  I wouldn't be suprised most of them will work with PMDG's 737.
