Remote linking of images & Imageshack (Read 810 times)

I think Imageshack should be excluded from the prohibition of using remotely linked images.
The reason for the existence Imageshack is that you can upload your pics there without having anyone bitching for traffic abuse and stuff. You don't need to resize your photos and shrink them down to below 100KBytes with the inevitable loss of quality.
Yeah, I know that, if you put some photos with a 1600+ px resolution into a thread here, the whole thing would get FUBAR, but if it was limited to showing thumbnails only?

The reason for my request is:
I'd really like to put some of my pics from my trip to Ireland in the photos forum as well as in my blog. For the latter, I'd just ned to upload them and put some thumbnails in my entry, where as for this forum, I'd have to shrink, crop, rename and compress them, which can be a real PITA if you want to show like 20 pics.
By using Imageshack, I'd save meself quite some hassle, since I'd just have to copy and paste the URLs for the thumbnails from the Image shack site into my thread.

Be nice and save me some hassle...and I Promise, no one will be bitching about stolen traffic or something. Not even the 56K users, because I'll only use thumbs. Wink

Your points are valid, however, I would venture that the policy should remain the same.

There's no reason, however, why you can't put the URL lnk instead of the the IMG tags ...

Example: <URL=http://link to the image..]>image description such as "me kissing the Blarney Stone"</URL>

((with of course the  < > replaced with [ ] )

You get the text teaser, and the person can open the image in a new window...

You could also use Eno's idea of posting the thumbnails in your topic. Link these to the URL of the appropriate images hosted on Imageshack or any other remote host.

That's what I was talking about. Wink

If no one has a problem with that - fine.

I don't see any problem with that as it's exactly the same as posting a link to the image in the topic.

PS. Just as long as you upload the thumbnails here & post them in the usual way.

The thumbnail solution is the only one the mods (and more importantly Pete) will accept on pain of hot marmalade in a surprising (and very painful) place Grin In fact if I did this to someone they'd probably end up featuring in a medical text book or two!
Alas the whole linked image thing is driving us nuts..... maybe I'll go get the Lanc loaded up and ready Grin

Loss of quality - of the forums that is.

1. This server has to fetch images when they are posted outside. - Takes time & user patience

2. The reasonfor the size restriction is to allow the thread to size on the screen without the need to scroll . .....  Who likes scrolling just to read text? If I'm on a site where I have to wait 30 seconds for a thread to download - that site is history.

AGAIN - I stress - this is for you guys - not for us. Users come 1st here - general users not individuals.  & the vast majority want:  no side scroll & quick downloads.   8)

There is little if any argument to that.

Hense our rules.

& Again - our rules are for our users - not for us.
