If the two dots is called a Diaeresis, then what is an umlat (oom-lot)... I know I must have spelled that wrong.

yup. in german, for example, these can be used instead of the umlaute. ae = ä, ue = ü, oe = ö.

so, people. as you can see, german can very easily be written with an english keyboard. there's no need for the umlaute. i always wondered why so many people write ö,ü,ä as o,u,a (which is just wrong) instead of ae, ue, oe Wink

EDIT: actually the most common german word in published in english writings is probably "Führer" lol. remember, kids: "Fuhrer" is a word that does not exist in the German language. so from now on it's "Fuehrer" Grin Wink

So how do you generate the characters "ae", "ue", and "oe", which overlap each other as in "Ae"sop's Fables.... Wink...?
Note: that they can be a mix of upper and lower case letters...

Cheers all...!

Paul.

Roll Eyes
Good Question. I've done it with a graphics program but that means generating it as a px, taking a lot of extra time. The name Alfred used to be 'Ae'lf(=Elf but now Alf in the name) 'raed'(=council); now it's gone the way of Aesop's fables.
Originally, one tried pronouncing both letters at the same time but the enunciation and the vocabulary went through major changes after 1066A.D. Did the pronunciation change cause the spelling change or, as seems more likely, the spelling change alter the pronunciation ???
