Modded Graphics Drivers (worth it or not) (Read 543 times)

Hi all,

just a little question for you all........
Have any of you used Modded Graphics drivers at one time or another???

I stumbled across them a few months ago on Guru3d.com while looking for tweeks for anOld Radon 9000 series card.... and started using these drivers "DNA-ATi 3.9.5.4 (Catalyst 5.4)"..... at first they where a big improvement on frame rates (over the original drivers) but also came with the ability to overclock aswell which i had been wondering on how to do it for a while..... cut a long story short i ended up selling this card for £25 as i upgraded to the Radeon9250se......

Now this card i liked immediately... a big improvement on graphics and frame rate.... and then i installed the updated (modded) drivers on it...... Bigger Improvement until the drivers alerted me to an update...... which didn't seem to work properly.... as none of my games seemed to recognise the graphics card...and if they did.... ran terrible with worse graphics than my old tnt2 card......

Thats why i haven't posted more shots...... until i installed the "zer0point Catalyst 0.59" and this solved all the problems that had been described previously.... now i'm running Flight Sim at Max Everything and still getting around 30fps even with all the terrain mesh that i use installed and the various scenery/enhancements aswell......

I know this probably Invalidates my warrenty but i also have the original drivers that came with the card........

Have any of you had a similar experiance.....

Nemo......

I've often used modded drivers, however, often you pay the price of some (usually older) games not working correctly, I've found for example, some modded Nvidia drivers I've used work great, and I mean great! , on Battlefield 2!  8) However, FS9's water textures look completely wrong, and Far Cry will not run at all.

The best policy, use verified/ certified drivers from your cards manufacturer, you will still have issues (anybody care to demonstrate a 100% stable display driver? - Thought not!  Wink ) however, fewer and farther between.

Paul.

I know it may seem daft but the latest drivers (after i've uninstalled the previous set properly) always give me problems.

The current ones i'm using are the DNA-ATI 4.45.10 which are giving me no problems at all and these are modded.......

Nemo......

sticks with the drivers he's using

Yeah, but you are using a stinking old ATI card nemo......

Old card........ known ATI driver problems ......... and who knows what other system specific issues are present.

My experience with modded drivers has either been bad or indifferent. I've gotten to the point (after many years of mucking about), that I now just look for the latest certified drivers.

People who think upgrading drivers are going to help performance are only fooling themselves. Sure you may get a slight increase in FPS but usually at the expense of quality.

When drivers are uninstalled and reinstalled, the custom settings are affected, which can have a profound impact on peformance, giving the impression of an improvement.

There is a great deal more to graphics performance than drivers, and unfortunately, this is hidden by the hype and retoric of the "this driver is better than that" hordes.

Get a decent graphics card and you'll realise how stupid the driver debate is.

Drivers only ever need to be upgraded if you have an issue with them, otherwise..... leave them alone, you'll probably cause more harm than good.

Yeah, really not much change from driver to driver. I know that some ppl claimed the drivers were changing there temps around. I have never seen this confirmed, the company was prolly just tweaking the sensor calibration.

Well.. I am going through a system reinstall.

before I was using the omega drivers and I was able to max fs and lock at 22 and get stable framerates will any payware

this time I tried the latest catalyst and I am using everything default, same configuration and a default mooney bravo at KSMO at dusk gives me 13 fps...

Omegadrivers are supported by ATI but they where giving me some issues on the side (no modded drivers are stable).. but the catalyst are just not giving me the same performance.

don't tell me drivers don't affect your fs since with omegadrivers I had full AA nad AF and all textures looked right.. with alot of mix of payware and freeware.
Catalyst all default and maxed full AA and AF... the default fs water textures look awful... and frames are gone..

???
