So a selection of RR engines at the Science Museum...
The RR Merlin III for REAL men!
The RR 'R' Schneider Trophy engine belonging to the Supermarine S6B, mother of the Merlin
RR Merlin 60 series cut-away (what a waste I need one of these!!!)
And just for my old pal Roger a Griffon (yuk)
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

All those Rolls Royce aero engines are sweet though.
Hey Mark, why has that Merlin 60 got a tag on it that says Daimler-Benz DB605 ???

Hopefully dangling from the beast above...
Lovely engines. Amazing to think though that that Merlin III would produce a little over 1000hp. The Tucano gets 1051hp from something quarter of the size (if that)!

It is amazing but somehow it never had quite the same appeal to me as a Merlin at full chat.

I can't help wondering how you can tell how big they are without something to compare them with.

I'd rather have a Napier Sabre actually.

And I bet more than a few Typhoon pilots would have wished they had a Merlin

Sorry I chopped a bit of the spinner off.

Reliable as it is I don't think the Typhoon would have been a Typhoon with a Merlin.

After a few months it has no appeal at all...

Yes I doubt the poor old Merlin could get a fully loaded Typhoon off the ground
Maybe a Griffon then
I'd still like to hear what that saber sounds like.

Me too although I somehow doubt I will ever have that pleasure. Don't think I've even heard a decent recording of one.

Charlie is quite right the 605 was in the rack above the Merlin 60 and looking a wee bit lonely surrounded by British metal

I got a rather poor shot of that 605 if anyone's interested.
