Unsure on how long this flight will take to complete as usual General Aviation aircraft will be used.

The server we will be using for the flight Tommorrow will be a 2002/2004 server, i.p address 221.203.169.108 .

Hope to see you all there.

I may join later and ask what the nearest airport is to your current location.

Does anyone know how to work the radar in the Tucano? I can get the display up but it doesn't show any blips even though I have visual on traffic.

Have you tried teamspeak yet Fozz? How did it go with your dialup?

Hi 61... Grin...!

Teamspeak....?
Nah....downloaded it, tested it, but haven't tried it in Multiplayer*...
John B reckons it's a no-no using dial-up, and I don't have any probs with using the chat window anyway... Wink...!

Note: I always fly the default planes, knowing that everyone else will have them in their hangar... 8)...!

For anyone who is using a downloaded plane that no-one else has, it wont appear on other flyer's screens... Cry...!

Cheers...!

Paul....(Hereford).... 8)...!

* If you use Teamseak for voice communication, do you loose the engine sounds, and other sound effects in the headset, similar to wearing a David Clark, noise suppressing "active" head-set in a real aircraft...?

Fozzer,

It all depends on how you set it all up.

If you have one computer and one sound card... then the Teamspeak audio gets "mixed" right into the audio strream coming from the sim.  In fact... you might have to adjust the levels of one or both to get them balanced appropriately.

If you have TWO sound cards installed in one computer, you CAN direct the teamspeak sound to one card and the regular windows audio (the sim) to the other.  That would allow you to put the headphones ande microphone on one sound card....and the speakers for the sim on the other.  Quite realistic.

In my simpit I have multiple computers running to "drive" the various functions of the pit.  On the one that displays the glass cockpit ND and the standby backup instruments I also run Teamspeak.  This computer accesses the net via the simpit LAN and the DSL modem.   The sound card's in and out are connected to jacks on the "real fake panels Wink" that I hook my headset into.  Output can be switched to a separate open speaker, if I want it there.

So the cockpit itself has only the sounds normally associated with the cockpit itself in it.... like wind noise, avionics sounds, and engines.  ONLY comms audio comes thru the headphones...........except for a tad of cockpit noise that gets fed back in thru the microphone from the background.  Again VERY realistic.

Hope this info helps.

best,

................john

Hi Strat... Grin...!

Welcome to our merry band of extroverts... Grin...!

The journey is a couple of hundred miles long, so the default General Aviation, Cessna Caravan, (turbo-prop), sounds like an excellent machine for the purpose....  Wink...!

I shall probably try the default Beech Baron 58, twin piston prop...good for fairly quick medium to long distances... Smiley...!

this is the general route that we will be taking tonight:

Nemo,

Do you realize that the IP you gave is for a flight server out of China/Japan?  It has a really high data lag time at least from NA.... WSPilots is typically about 60 and this one is about 330.  Plus I can't read what the server policies are on the website... so do we know if we are in "violation" of their rules by not using Teamspeak...or by not XXXXXXXXX?

Just stuff to consider.

best,

We will be using the WSP server if we are all using FS2004, but if there is someone that is using fs2002 we will have to change to a 2002/2004 server:

WSP i.p:  66.147.177.125 (23458 Yellowstone)
CFSO i.p: 221.203.169.108

Hopefully within the next few days i'll have sorted the hosting problem out so i'll hopefully be hosting them from next week onwards,.

So its WSP tonight then.......

Nemo...... starting sim up in 20mins.....

The SimV world mesh is great for the UK as theres only 4 files to download;

EC12
EC13
EC35
EB90

They cover all of England, Scotland and Ireland (excluding the Shetland Islands) and parts of northern France, Holland and Germany.

Paul,
I use the terrain mesh from SimV but i also use these textures from Avsim:

ukn.zip
http://library.avsim.net/sendfile.php?Location=AVSIM&Proto=ftp&DLID=45226

uksw.zip
http://library.avsim.net/sendfile.php?Location=AVSIM&Proto=ftp&DLID=45228

uke.zip
http://library.avsim.net/sendfile.php?Location=AVSIM&Proto=ftp&DLID=45224

it makes the U.K less flat, and doesn't kill the frame rates as much as some do  Grin Grin Grin

Hi Lads....!
I've just downloaded and installed the scenery mesh for the UK...
EC12, EC13, EC35 and EB90.

http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm

It's still completely naff, and bears no relationship to the real scenery which I am used to seeing while touring the country on my bike... Shocked...!
Herefordshire is full of hills, and Wales should be full of high mountains, but these just don't appear in the new mesh...very disappointing...!
When flying at 500-1000 feet we should be surrounded by hills, but this is not the case in the Sim...Buggar...!
England gets flatter with each new Flight Sim version...!

Whereas....
My trips around California are totally realistic*, even using the default scenery, (I have installed upgraded scenery and mesh which improves it even more).... Grin... Grin... Grin...!

The UK is the absolute pitts for flying with FS '98/2000/2002/2004... Cry...!
It's time we took our favourite babies over to California, (or Alaska), and enjoyed a bit of REAL scenery, courtesy of Uncle Bill... Grin...!
LOL...!

Cheers chaps...!

Paul..G-BPLF...8)...!

* referring to my relief maps of California... Wink

Uncle Bill and his scenery designers really do not like Great Britain...
Trust me... Wink...!

I think I have to agree with you Paul, though it is better than the default scenery at least. Perhaps Holger Sandmann could have a go at the UK! He's produced some great meshes for North America.

You saw my shots from the multiplayer...... get the FSGenesis mesh for the UK.  Yes it is payware... but it DOES make a difference.  That single one might be $10-15....if I am remembering correctly.

Paul ............ you'll need to alter your FS9.cfg ........ Find the setting for terrain_max_vertex change the value to 21, if you haven't already done so.

Hi eno...!

Thanks for the tip.... Wink...!

It has certainly lifted the hills up, somewhat....
...but still looks nuffin' like my surrounding rolling countryside as viewed from the cockpit of my real Cessna 152... Cry...!
...and the Welsh mountains are still pretty flat, from what I know of them...
...but it is an improvement...

Cheers eno...!

Paul... 8)...!

(I wonder what "terrain_max_vertex = 50" would look like....the Alps...?)... Grin...!

I think 21 is the highest that fs2004 recognizes.  I THINK the range is 19 to 21.

Yeah, mine was set to 19. Though it didn't seem to make much difference...

It only makles a difference if the mesh is of a higher resolution than the "default" that M$ put in.

Hi Tweek...!

The default resolution is "19".
After installing any of this this mesh, it is recommended changing it to "21"

http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm

Have a peek at the "readme" file... Wink...!

Changing the number to 21 seems to accentuate parts of the land heights slightly, (hills are higher, and peakier!)...!

For one of the highest "default" resolutions, (37m), in the sim, pop over to Catalina Island off the coast of Los Angeles... 8)...!

Cheers Mate...!

Paul.

Here is an explanation about the default Microsoft terrain mesh taken (under "Fair Use") from the FSGenesis website:

Quote:
Terrain Mesh is the shape of the ground in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000/2002/2004. It is compiled by FSGenesis using real world data in the form of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Natural Resources Canada (NRC), Centre for Topographic Information.
The default terrain mesh covering most of the world is 1223m horizontal resolution, that is, 1223m between elevation points. There are small areas of the Japan and the south Pacific, including Papua New Guinea, with 76.4m terrain. Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa is done in 76.4m.

The default terrain mesh covering the United States is generally 611.5m horizontal resolution, that is, 611.5m between elevation points. Small areas of the western United States are done in 153.2m, as well as the entire Caribbean. The Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Mount Rainier, Yosemite, and Catalina Island are done in 76.4m.

Some of the FSGenesis payware terrain mesh is data from down to 9.6m resolution.....places like the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Jackson Hole and the Tetons, Hawaii, and so on.  I'll post a shot or two below in a few minutes.

Hawaii

...

Jackson Hole

...

Black Hills

...

Devil's Tower

...

One thing I did notice...>>>
Quote:
Find and open up FS2004.CFG file in NOTEPAD and scroll down until you find the [TERRAIN] section. Edit this line shown below to read as I have it here:  [TERRAIN] TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21  Leave all other entries under [TERRAIN] alone.  Save your changes to FS2004.CFG, and close Notepad.
End Quote.

after changing the value from 19 to 21, the rivers and streams now have "proper" banks, ie, they are now sunk into the ground, as they should be...  8)...!

(The roads where they pass over them, also sink down into them...but a small price to pay...)... Wink...!

Paul....paddling in a stream somewhere near you... Grin...!

That's why we are flying, not driving.
