Well, a while back my dad got a magazine in the mail from the 101st Airborne Division Association. He is a member of their veterans association because he served with them in Vietnam.
Anyway, in the magazine was an ad for a DVD about the historcy of the division. In that add were several graney photos from different times in the division's history-there was one from WWII another for Vietnam and a couple more (including one from Iraq).
So, when he got the magazine he was flipping through it and found this add and he noticed the Vietnam photo and it was him!!! Although it is very graney, he says that he knows the photo very well and remembers when it was taken. I thought that was cool so I scanned it into my computer. I thought I would share it:
Once he told me that is was him, he asked me if there was anything odd I noticed about the photo. I quickly said "yeah, you have hair!" Of course, I got a dirty look-lol.
What he was actually refering to is the fact that he is shooting righthanded (he usually shoots left
).

Firinging a 'Nam era Colt AR left-handed wouldn't be something I'd like to try.
And perhaps that's why you're father is doing it from the right.
None-the-less, very interesting turn of events.

Cool find 8) I'd be careful with the hair jokes
The AR-18 had the ejection port on the right so unless your dad wanted hot shell casings burning his face I think he probably made the right decision on using the gun right handed
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

My understanding is that he ususally shoots left handed even then (he's very good with both). He said when that photo was taken he had just reached the Huey and turned around and started shooting (they were introuble and were being extracted). Apparently there was a photographer in the helicopter and they had been diverted to pick them up.
I'm not sure exactly what kind of a rifle it is, because its not a standard M-16. It is some kind of special forces carbine (perhaps an M-4?) but I know he usually shot left handed.

It is the CAR-15, the carbine version of the AR-18 (M-16)

Ozzy's right in all areas but one, it's the AR-15.
The AR-18 was the M16's somewhat unsuccessful brother.

I asked my father what is was earlier, it is a CAR-15 (like Ozzy said); an M-16 carbine.
He told me that he usually shot left with them (even though they would burn his arm) because he was a better shot. I asked him why he wasn't shooting left in the photo is because an RPG had landed near him running to the helicopter and damaged his left ear and made his left eye water and he couldn't see. So, he was shooting right.
