I just installed Martyn Becker's "Engine Exhaust System" that was recently put into the SimV libraries onto my trusty old BAe 146-200 by Jon Murchison.  The config he suggests for the RJ85 seems to get things just about correct for effects placement.

The engine idle "shimmer effect" while sitting on the runway is great and it appeasrs at first testing to work just fine.  it might be just a HAIR overdone... but it is FAR better then NO engine heat effect.

However, when I advance the throttles, and I am assuming the "smoke" effect portion of the system kicks in........ if I view the aircraft from anywhere NEAR the rear half....... large chunks of the aircraft seem to be "removed" by large square "flying particles".

If I view the aircraft from anywhere the front side looking toward the rear ... I see the subtle smoke trail just fine and no "obliterating mysteerious blocks" appear.

Here is a shot from the rear on climbout so you can see what I am talking about. Yes... there IS an entrire intact aircraft there  Wink.

...

And zoom factor does not seem to help no matter how far out.  The closer I get to the plane, the less of the plane I see at all.  Further away and I still see the "boxes"...... just smaller.

Any suggestions?

best,

...................john

PS:  Martyn Becker has discovered the perfect stealth technology here with a little more work  Grin.

Hi John: Becker here!

The problem is that you haven't copied the .bmp texture files from the ZIP file into the right place - they need to go into the 'texture' folder inside the 'effects' folder. This will cure your problem.

I also fly the Murchison Avrojets a lot, and here are the updated location lines for the APU so that the plume comes out of the right place!

RJ85:
light.x=5, -31.50, 4.00, 4.00, fx_APU

RJ100:
light.16=5, -35.00, 4.00, 4.00, fx_APU

Happy flying!

Martyn

If you think that the heat haze plume is a little dark, you can replace the 'heavy' effects file with the 'medium' effects file to cut down the density (change the reference in the aircraft.cfg control lines). It's a fine balance between having the effect as real as possible, or having it so you can see it without straining your eyes too much!

Microlight,

Thanks for the post and the PM reply.

I'll go try to sort it out.

You really should go try to sell that technology to the Air Force......... visual stealth.  It's worth a FORTUNE!   Wink

Microlight,

OK... Houston we have a problem.

I just went and checked the download....... there ARE no .bmp texture files in the zip file at all!  And the instructions don't say anything about needing them.

Here's the installation instructions:

INSTALLATION:
-------------
- extract the zip to a temporary folder
- copy the 'autosmoke' folder COMPLETE into your FS 'gauges' folder - don't copt the .xml files direct into the gauges folder
- copy the .fx files into the FS 'effects' folder. You shouldn't be asked to overwrite anything as the filenames do not exist in the MS default
- add control lines to the aircraft.cfg and panel.cfg as detailed in the MANUAL. There is a separate Word file which is easier to read than the text below

I downloaded the zip file from the library here a couple of days ago.  Unzipped the archve twice... no textures in it.

HELP!

Microlight,

In fact I just also noticed that there is NO file there called fx_APU either.

Well, John, I'm stumped. I just checked my original ZIP and it's definitely got the textures in it. I'll email it to you so you'll definitely have what I have.

Regarding the installation - the readme is a quick-and-dirty introduction - the detailed installation instructions are in the PDF manual.

Microlight,

OK... I think I have some of this figured out.  We've been discussing apples and oranges.   Wink

I looked at the version that I have on my machine.  It is a zipfile labeled Version 2.

I just went and checked the newest pages of the SimV Misc. library, based on your comment above about "a couple of days ago".  There is also a Version 3.....with a tiny Version 3 update file there.  Surprise surprise.

I am not sure about this....... but I am guessing that somewhere in the SimV file library lurks the Version 2 of the add-on.  Or somehow I downloaded it elsewhere and have completely forgotten about it.  Or I had the Version 3 from here... and then inadvertantly downloaded the Versioon 2 from elsewhere and overwrote the zip file somehow.

Most likely... I had the Version 2 sitting in my machine..... but not yet installed... and then downloaded the Version 3 zipfile from here..... and then went and inadvertantly unzipped and INSTALLED the Version 2 one withiout noticing my mistake.

Looking at the files in the two versions of them... they are now VERY different.  So I guess I have some uninstalling and some reinstalling to do.

Mystery solved... sort of.  Sorry.

best,

.....................john

OK... I'm still having some problems with the Version 3 EES effects.

I have them installed in Jon Murchison's BAe 146-200 with the panel by Matthias Liebrecht.

Now I cannot turn on my taxi lights.  When I flick the taxi light switch... they turn on for an instant and go right back off.  BUT....... when I advance the throttle on roll-out...... they suddenly come on.

No duplicate numbers in the LIGHTS section of the aircraft cfg file.  New autosmoke guage installed in the correct folder location.  The effects bitmaps in the right place.

Also the engine exhaust smoke at cruise is, for me still too smoky compared to reality.  Any easy suggestions for cutting it back a bit.....other than editing the effects file?

best,

John,
Because the effects work using the lighting switches, one of the side effects is that if you have taxi and logo light switches in the panel, they do exactly as you indicate. I think there might be a workaround - give me a little while to think it through and I'll get back to you. See your IM regarding the effects files!

Thanks,
Martyn

Thanks, John - you're too kind. I'll post the updates as an add-on to EES.
