It's a bit large...both in dimension and file size. It's within the rules...but will fill a thread pretty quickly if you post only a few times.

How about using this version instead? 75% of the dimensions...but only half the file size.

It's the same process as posing an image in a post (img tags and a link to the photo which has been uploaded to SimV).  But, you put that link into your signature section of your profile.

For example, I have this image in my signature:
...

All I did was upload my file titled "oreflag.gif" to the SimV photo server (just like your avatar) and put the link in the signature section (under profile).  Like below:
