Hello all! Are you ready for another long flight? Well we have one in store for you this weekend!

On Saturday September 10th at 9pm eastern standard time we will depart C77 (Poplar Grove Illinois)  and fly to, KPPO (La Porta Indiana).

This flight will be approximately 104 Nautical miles so I would recommend something small and slow. Something along the lines of Bill Lyons fabulous Luscombe, or tripacer would be appropriate.. Smiley

For general answer please refer to the general question thread:
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Multi;action=display;num=1...

Please remember to let us know if you will be coming and give us a heads up your skype name so we can give you a call when it comes time to go flying..

Due to a movie premiere tomorrow night I will not be attending the session until real late if at all, but I hope that you all have a good flight!

Stearman I think would be OK, but I think the Cub would be a little slower than the rest and you would quickly fall behind.. Wink

I still have no clue what time it would be over there..... Wink

IP address will be posted later, unfortunately if the power goes out, or my router recycles it can sometimes switch to a new IP address.

This is the reason I have to post it every week, otherwise it may not be the same next week.. Wink

Nemo,

Do some testing out on Skype so that you can get it working.

And if this flying group gets any bigger...... we are going to have to change what we use for voice comms...... since Skype has a limit on the number of people in a conference call.

I vote for Teamspeak  Wink.

And I vote a big fat no on TeamSpeak. I've had more problems with that stupid program than you can imagine. I just hate it. Of course, if everyone else wants to use that, I won't object. I just hate it.

I'd rather just have 2 confrences on Skype. That's just my opinion. Tongue

Ben,

What kind of problems on Teamspeak?

I have installed it on three different machines and it works flawlessly on all of them.  But I DO hacve a DSL connection...so that might be the difference.  I've been on flying with up to more than 30 people at a time and they all worked fine.

One key item is to use PTT......NOT voice activation.  Most people set up VOX too sensitive... and everytime they breathe or sniff... it activates  Wink.

I actually have more problems with hearing people on Skype with the "conference call approach" than on Teamspeak.  I find that the volume differences between only 5 people are huge on Skype.  But it does not seem consistent between all of us.  For a random name example, say......  Jared can hear you just fine... and I can hear Jared just fine, but I can barely hear you.  Jared hears me really loud, but Storm can't hear me.  And so on.

As you well know... it is difficult when some people on the "Tour" are not on voice... and they miss out on a lot of the fun....as well as comms that keep them in the loop.  Typing and reading the typing gets overlooked a lot by those on voice too.

best,

....................john

John,

If my TS worked like you described it I would jump to it in a heartbeat!! Shocked

Anyways, my problems...

For one the quality seems really bad. The volume is one good thing about TS as it seems everyone sounds about the same. But for quality...that's another story. I've done a few online ATC sessions on WSPilots, and often I had to ask them to repeat. And other times...I wasn't sure if they were talking to me or someone else. Also sometime I have trouble getting in to a TS server. This has happened on severel TS servers.  And I was positive I was doing everything correctly.

But I don't know, maybe if I played with the settings a bit, I could get it to work better. Smiley

Let's see what the other guys think... Wink

Ben,

There are a number of options in Teamspeak of what codecs you use.  You might play with them.

Also there is a checkbox that tells TS to use "unlimited" bandwith.  I have found that this does not seem to deteriorate the speed of the connection for FSing if you have broadband.  Try that and see if the quality improves.  If so... try a different CODEC.

I find the voice quality on TS as good as Skype for most people.  OCCASIONALLY someone will sign on that sounds like "Donald Duck with a sore throat"........ but that is usually those on dial up or with a bad setup.

Also... do you have the necessary ports for TS set up on your firewall and on your router / cable modem / dsl modem?  Maybe that is an issue on the sigining into a server.  I've NEVER been unable to sign in to a TS server... unless I typed the IP address or the password wrong.

And while we are discussing all this ..... maybe instead of Jared having to host the session every time on his machine... we could use an existing flight server like the WSP freeflight one with it's separate Teamspeak server?  Just a thought........ and it frees up Jared from the "pain in the butt" factor.

best,

.................john
