Indonesian rescue workers gather around the wreckage of a Mandala Airlines Boeing 737-200 that crashed in Medan, in northern Sumatra.
The death toll is at least 117 people on board and an unknown number of people on the ground.
It crashed into a crowded residential area in the northern city of Medan on the island of Sumatra.
The Mandala Airlines Boeing 737 was heading to Jakarta when it crashed seconds after takeoff and burst into flames.
I'm beginning to think that 737s are getting more and more dangerous. How many is it now? Five down in 2 months?
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

Update - six passengers survived the crash
One of them was well enough to run away from the plane as he was worried it'd explode!
Unfortunately 30 have so far been confirmed as killed on the ground

I'm sorry to hear about this. There do seem to have been more fatal accidents than usual this year, most involving the 737. Not really surprising when you think the Boeing 737 is the most popular airliner ever built.
Quote:
With over 3,300 orders the Boeing 737 has become the world's all time best-selling commercial jetliner. Over 2,700 have already been delivered to more than 250 customers in 95 countries. By 1996, 737s had carried more than 4.3 billion passengers and flown more than 26.6 billion miles. Through March 31, 1996, the current generation 737 was the most reliable jet airplane in commercial aviation, with a dispatch reliability of 99.4%. Over 700 737s are in the sky at all times
Many of the earlier models are getting on in years & generally used by the smaller airlines. I obviously can't comment on the cause of this latest accident but their maintenance & crew training might not be up to the standard of the major airlines. You might as well say that all Ford motor cars are potentially dangerous.

RIP for those who died. Like the Helios crash, only the tail is lefted. My trauma of flying in 737 is now rising! I never touch those planes again! The 24 year old plane is capable of flying well in 8 years. That is a well maintened plane. It may cause by some problems with it's engines or it's control surfaces.
In the memory of 121 people in the Helios Crash. RIP
