Okay, after an hour or so of browsing www.airliners.net, I've hit a question.  How do all those photographers find what the aircraft number actually is (e.g 747-422)  I can see how they found the 747-4 part, as that is shown in the aircraft's design (747-400).  I figured maybe the last two numbers had to do with the aircraft's tail number, but it seems to have no correlation, so just HOW do they know?

You can look up the N number on google or yahoo and one of the first finds will be the FAA registration of the aircraft stating some things about that aircraft....including the type.

Also there might be pictures of the same aircraft on that websites so they just copy that info down.

747-406 is KLM
Just customer codes.

With Airbus the number indicates the engine choice

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

Didn't know there were 66 customers for the A300-600!

I'm not sure if Airbus use the same system as Boeing though...

...It would to have a 737-666 though... Cheesy
