P,S.  I've got a funny feeling that the old 3D Mark '01 doesn't really test the card in 3D mode....?
Maybe only 3D Mark '05 does that successfully with the latest cards, and Direct X 9c...?

3dmark01 does run in 3d mode, but only 3dmark05 will truly so you the abilties of a 6600gt.

3dmark01, except for one short badly implemented game test, does not support shaders which are everywhere in modern games. Cards like 6600 gt have vertex and pixel shaders processes that go unused in a dx7 benchmark and are barely pushed in the dx8.1 nature test.

A dx7 card would die if its GPU was told to run shaders (if it could support shaders).

My advice is to use 3dmark05. That benchmark is a true test of your card.

IT takes ages on broadband too! Trust me Paul! Grin I think the site has a limited/restricted download speed. Dan insisted I got it to grade my new machine (it actually didn't do that well cause I don't overclock Angry -huh!) - so I did - but I'm not really into getting the max out of my 'puter. Like you I'd rather not risk throwing several hundred pounds down the toilet just for a couple of extra frames... Wink

I had a C++ teacher that played old games like doom1 and alpha centauri and the orginal C&C on an ati rage card.

When I showed him 3dmark 05, he sh*t himself. (I brought my computer to class because I prefered it over school comps)

Further update....

Angry

Aaaaarrrrggghhhhh......just got the RMA report for the 6600GT that I returned

It WAS faulty - so I've now had both a faulty 9800Pro and 6600GT.

Trouble is, I've obviously now got mobo damage as a result as I'm getting the same errors (immediate hang on entering 3D mode) with my original GeForce 3 Ti 200 even with a new, fresh install. Didn't happen after I went back to it after the 9800 Pro so it must have been caused by the 6600GT. Also means I can't run FS2004 just now.

I'm now getting a Gainward 6800LE and I'll open up the pipes and shaders when I've confirmed it works OK. I've also now had to order a replacement mobo as well as I can't risk putting the new card into a mobo which I think is damaged that may also then damage it.

Upgrading is real fun ain't it. And more expensive than you first thought.

Incidentally, last Christmas when I was building a PC for a client I had a handling accident with an AMD 64 3000+ CPU. Ended up snapping off an edge pin. I've now managed to solder on a replacement so I've also ordered a mobo (Abit NF8 ) to see whether that works. If so, I'll put the 6800LE in that - would have preferred PCI-e but with all this hassle I now have no choice.

I'll let you know how I get on  ???
