Oh well...

Decided in the end to go for the 6600GT. I'll be happy if I get the same sort of performance as congo. I'll let you know when I get the replacement in a few days time.

Afternoon Roger....!
I got my BFG 6600 GT OC 128Mb (£175) from....>>>

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/6600AGP_Series.html

...after my previous nVidia GF 2400 Ti 64 Mb card.

Very pleased with it, but where Congo gets his 20,192 3D marks from 3D Mark '01 beats me!....I get 7270 using the same program, (1024X768 32 bit)... Roll Eyes...!

Still...
A consistant 30 FPS, (locked, everything maxed), on Flight Sim 2004 is pretty good...  Grin...!

See how you get on with it... Wink...!

Cheers Mate...!

Paul.

Paul, got a feeling your numbers are from 3DMark2003. My 9700Pro gave over 11000 in 2001 and your 6600GT must be higher than that.

???

Yeah seems pretty low. Anyhow wait till I get my replacement because I'm also running an AMD 2600+ but with NForce 2 chipset (which apparently has now been rated as not so hot).

I reckon the problem may be in the size of your wiener which may be restricting overall performance - choking they call it  Roll Eyes

That score is too low to  be a video card driver problem you would think.

Maybe the card is not kicking into "3D" mode at all for some reason Paul.

These 6600GT cards, like the FX5900's, use seperate clockspeeds  for 2D and 3D modes. You need to open FS9 in a window and then run a diagnostic like "Everest" to check the "active" clock rates, unless you some other means of accurately doing that.

I had the problem with my FX card and it turned out that the auxilliary power cable had a bad connector and on  that particular card, it wouldn't kick into 3D mode without the extra power supply.

Other possibles are incorrect bios settings, or maybe even the GART or mainboard AGP driver, correct DX9 ?

Some FX owners reported the cards would "Lock" into 2D mode, I can't remember the solution offhand. I've never heard about the problem  with the 6600GT though.

If you sort the problem, you're gonna be really pleased with the performance increase Old M8.

Now here's a turn-up for the books.... Shocked...!
I thought I would boot-up my 2nd hard drive which contains Windows '98SE and 3D Mark 2001 SE....
So...
Using the same settings as my Win XP Pro (SP1), I ran the program again...
...and what 'appens... Wink... Grin...>>>

...

...what do you make of that then...?
Ran as sweet as a nut...!
So much for Win XP...(never did like it... Cry...)...!

Cheers all happy Win '98SE users... Grin... Grin... Grin...!

Paul.

By the way...I reinstalled my VIA 4in1 chipset drivers for the motherboard in Win XP (again!), but I do get the report...
"For USB 2.0 driver support under Windows XP operating system please use Windows Service Pack"
I dont have Service Pack 2...TOO BIG to download on 56k, (for the original OEM disk installation).
Is SP2  really necessary...?
Cheers...!

I highly recommend SP2. Its really ehlps with compatbility issus as well as security issues.

BTW, if you want to try forcing speeds and see if it works.

Use the coolbits hack and then force the 2d and 3d settings to be the same.

Stock for 6600 gt is 500 mhz core and 1 ghz (1000 mhz) memory.

See if tha works.

I have never had any problems with the 6600 gt. BTW, use a newer benchmark than 01. 01 is barely a dx8 benchmark. Your card is a dx9c with pixel shader 3. Use a more appropriate benchmark.

A typical stock 6600 gt shoul score around 3200 in 3dmark05.

I've gone through 4 different cards with 3dMark2001 se, and found that CPU speed does more that GPUs. I still use my FX5700Ultra (not non-ultra) in my backup computer, and I'm ver happy with it. I never heard of driver problems with it, nor have I ever had DX9 problems with it.

I went from a Ti4600, to a 5700U, to my 6800GT in the same motherboard/processor/ram, and had only a 4500 point difference in 3dMark01 (11,100 to 15,600).  Last time I marked (with current setup), I got 25,325. Maybe I should do it again sometime....

With 3dMark03, I doubled my score switching to the 6800GT from the 5700U.

Never BM'd 05 with the 5700U. Got like 5200 points with 6800GT, but that setup was bad I think... Long time ago.

Hi lads...!
Just to clear up a bit of confusion..(Confusion is my middle name.. Cry...)...!

I have the early, single, original OEM CD for the installation of my Windows XP Pro.
Would this CD also contain "Service Pack 1", or was SP1 an extra add-on...?

Downloading SP2 is a no-no...
1) Takes too long on 56k Dial-up, 2-hour cut-off.
2) There are "conflicts" with the registration details between the original OEM disk and the download program(s) from MicroSoft..... Cry......dont ask.... Wink...!

If SP1 is a seperate program, is it vital to have it installed...?
The same thing goes for SP2...?

Cheers all...!

Paul...(Confusious).... 8)...!

Unfortuately, SP1 is no longer available for download.

You have to get SP1 with SP2.

BTW, not sure if they are still doing this, but MS was shipping totally free (including shipping) SP2 CD's to anybody who ordered them.

Yep, they are still doing it.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.m...

And yes, I am absolutely believe that an install of SP2 is vital in the sense that if you don't install it, you won't get the security updates.

Cheesy

Wahaaay!

Just got my new 6600GT which I'll be installing later. And guess what, the nice people where I got my faulty 9800Pro from did a DIRECT replacement.

What it is to be a trade customer... Wink
