Apparantly the aircraft (belonging to Tunis Air) experienced engine problems and tried to land in Palermo on the italian island of Sicily.
Unfortuneatly, the aircraft hit the water just 13km off the coast of Palermo.
Latest reports indicates that 20 people have been rescued and 19 fatalities.

Well, it is the holiday season. That might have something to do with it. As usual the news reports are not very reliable. According to the BBC it was an ATR-72 & the number of fatalities is not known yet.
Quote:
The aircraft was an ATR-72, a French-made twin-engine turbo-prop aircraft which can carry up to 72 passengers. It had earlier been reported to be an ATR-42.

No point in commenting further until the full facts are known. IMHO

Sources of the Belgian radio claim the engines just stopped in mid-air and there was a fire on board...

A lot of GA crashes in my area this year, too- summer weather often plays a role, so combine that with vacation traffic, and... yes, it is sort of the season. Unusually bad this year, though...
