Well,Well,Well,
Thnx to the help of all you contriputors that encouraged me in my two threads, I managed to PARTLY network XP with 98.

Mostly I followed every single word from this info:-
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1055785144

I can see the 98 win Explorer from the XP one, and can transfer files, print via XP's printer, BUT NOT vise versa,  which was the whole point of the exersise so that my wife can dial, from her 98, the broadband of XP PC, for her emailing.

Can you help my above shortcomings?        luke

PS. I have screen shots of all the sattings I made if anybody needs to see them.

Hope the actual desktop printscreen below shows up,
and I don't get a bollocking from the bos for its size.

Actually just managed, by flook and trial & error, to see in 98 PC the XP one's C:\ partition, but not the other four.

I found "Network Neighbourhood" by going to Start / Find / computer and when "Family" appeared I doubleclicked it and presto winExplorer showed the XP C partition.

Most strange, no wonder people said was difficult.

Any way now I only need help to :
1. see the other partitions of XP PC (from 98 one)
2. how to use the broadband connection of XP from 98.

ok to see more folders on either pc you need to set up "sharing" rules on the pc's.

I can't remember in 98 but I know that XP if you right click a folder you can then set the sharing properties of it. For example you could just tell it to share the whole drive/partition you need access to for a bit... Wink

Just my two cents......

Right click the drives and set sharing in the properties.

I not sure of the security impact if you then connect to the net. It depends on whether or not the internet zone sees the shared drives as well, be careful.

If you have any unusual slowness to the connection between the two PC's then it's still faulty. If it's reasonably fast, then you have so far succeeded.

Internet Explorer functionality and web access from the Win '98 machine are now what you have to sort out, and this is usually where firewall issues become a real pain.

Remember to switch the firewall off if something doesn't seem right, to make sure the FW isn't blocking the connection.

Firewalls can be hardware, ISP, third party software and Windows Firewall, so just because you think you switched the windows firewall off, don't be too sure.

You'll probably need to understand whatever firewall/s you are using and how to set ICS up thru that firewall. It can get a little tricky for the mere mortals like us.

From what I could glean, the firewall needs to be on the XP machine only, but I'm not sure about that, best to get some good security advice from someone who absolutely knows.

The XP firewall needs to give the '98 machine access to the web, so the XP firewall needs be configured to allow ICS.

The free Zonealarm firewall doesn't allow this, and the Pro version is required to support ICS.

Windows firewall runs constantly as a background service despite turning it off. When I disable windows firewall, I also disable the firewall service.

Thnx Congo,
just managed to see all the partitions with your sharing trick, but I am sure I tried this earlier from another suggestion without success.

I am really geting confused.

The networking and sharing is almost instant, concidery the 98's CPU is only 500mhz, with 192 mb ram.

BUT the ICS part is dodgy.

At the moment I have the broadband cable on the 98 and connected. Only once I managed to share this connection on the XP, it was fast and saw your post on it.

I'm hazy of how I did it, but I think, on XP, I doubleclicked the the Brdband icon of the 98 desctop.

Somehow I lost this connection ,and since the I could not share it again, no matter what I do.

The Firewall is on XP & is the MS one, where did it appear from do not know, may be via Tiscali ?.

I went in it and added various things to allow them, but I'm in the dark.

Where is the service of MS one?

I am now going to move the Brdband cable back to the XP and try again ICS from that end, flook may come back to me!      Please stay with it, is GODD to Talk         luke

PS.     this is coming to you via 98, but alas not via ICS.

Now your getting me confused lol!

You need to hook the broadband up to the XP machine, that's imperitive as far as I know if you want use ICS. The older Op sys must connect THRU the XP one. If you had it that way when you set the network up, then it may still work, but if you changed it and reconfigured the network, it might be easier to start again.............

Are we having fun yet?

This is why autopilot was so adamant about getting a switch, ICS is so daunting a prospect that a cash/upgrade solution makes a lot of sense.

I myself need a home network at the moment, but it really gives me the @!$#% trying to set it up!

I was kinda hoping you'd stumble across an easy way so I could copy it....  Grin

At the moment my Network card is disabled so I can only demonstrate with a similar method using settings I see before me.
____________________________

On the Win'98 machine, you might want to look at this, or it's win'98 equivalent.............

Goto Int-Explorer/Tools/ Internet options/Connections/Settings/Properties/Networking......

Highlight TCP/IP and click Properties.

That page can make or break successful ICS configuration. If the network is auto-configuring the addresses thru DNS (I'm not totally sure about this mind you...) then the top section may be ok to leave on auto, I think I've seen it work that way.

But...... if you are normal, you would have the client IP set to ..............hang on a minute, here's a link that explains it all in pictures.....amazing!  Wink

http://smb.sygate.com/support/documents/shn/shn_iptutorial.htm

I wish those people that commented before about how easy this is would hurry back with the clues......  Roll Eyes

So, the host PC's network adapter gets the address of 192.168.0.1 and the client gets it's adapter's IP set to 192.168.0.2

Then the client must use 192.168.01 (host adapter) as it's Gateway. Dont' forget the subnet masks, 255.255.255.0

Now you know why I didn't just tell you how to begin with! It's because until you become familiar enough yourself with the settings and their locations, you would most likely get lost in the process. Now you should be "starting" to get the hang of it.

And there is still the firewall to configure!

I hope this helped

Cheers

Yes, Brodband returns to XP, I moved it to 98 just to change the routine a bit. (after all do'nt forget, actual ICS occured briefly there !).

Understand fully implications of "start again", I had too.

Sorry to dash your hopes.

TCP/IP is readyily at hand on desktop, it is the main key.

Tried various configs in there. Will study info URL now.

My XP is SP2, do'nt know how different from just XP?

see this short quodation form URL I gave in earlier post
He excused his NIL English, but his info helped me:- "...............>Asume:
>Win xp as a gateway with a broadband connection and a win98 client.
>First the Lan for filesharing and print.
>That is just 1 minute to set up.
>Set:
>In tcp/ip
>Xp lan card: ip:192.168.0.1
>subnetmask goes automatic if you click 255.255.255.0
>Netbios: check with tcp/ip
>Left all the other settings to deafault or blank.
 WIN 98:
>In tcp/ip
>win98 lan card:
1. ip:192.168.0.2
2. subnetmask:255.255.255.0
3. dns: 192.168.0.1
4. gateway: 192.168.0.1
And somthing to help you with a broadband connection with an ethernet card that assined an IP adress from your provider.
>Windows xp have support for DSl PPPoE conection. Ouaaaaaaaaaou. But they forgot to
>write a simple script to not trying to assign an ip adress to the ethernet that is
>used by your dsl connection. That ends with a 3 minutes(my god) delay on star up
>looking for an ip adress to assign in the lan ethernet while there is no need for
>it. I have not seen anything so foolish as that in my whole career.
>So just put an ip adress in the lan that you use for your broadband conection if
>you dont want to wait 3 minutes before windows realise that there is no matter what
>adress to assign in hte ethernet that used by a connection that gots ip adress from
>your provider.
>No matter what ip you provide the next time you boot you dont have to wait "a day"
>before you establish your broadband connection that needs half second ....................."

I wish too others came out with the info, you were right one needs to dirty his hands first before start learning.

see you                          luke

Networking is pretty much plug and play on modern equiment.

You should have been around when spanning tree and poison reverse (or split horizon) did not exist.

Well Congo,

Finally managed to dial up in 98 via the XP Broadband.

To start from scratch, I went 98 PC Ctrl Pnl, double click Network,
clicked and removed each component showing.

PC reboots, finds Ethernet card, ask for Floppy with drivers.

PC reboots.

To Network now with XP PC:-

Win98 PC:-
Find, Computers, type in the XP Computer Name (mine “family”) & search.

“Family” shows up instantly if XP PC is running, double click it and Win Explorer shows usual 98 PC staff PLUS:-

Network Neighborhood
    Entire Network
Bea      ( name of 98 computer)
Family ( name of XP computer)
           c:\
           d:\
           e:\
           f:\
           g:\
           SharedDocs

To ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) with XP PC:-

Note: It is not necessary to go into networking, as above, to dial out via XP, just have both PCs running.

Just doubleclicked the 98 PC IE icon, and within 5 seconds I saw the XP PC dialing and connecting.

The default site showed up in the IE, checked my Tiscali & Yahoo mail.

I tried the OE mail and after changing all my mailaccounts’s connection to “Local Area Connection” I send & received mail in OE.

So there, after 2 – 3 weeks of solid sloging it worked so sadden, as if nothing happened, anticlimax really.

I rebooted a couple of times, tried ICS and it worked, hope now it will all work again tomorrow.

I am posting this with the screen-print from my win98, 500mhz, 198 mb Ram PC.

See you all on the next assignement                            luke.

PS.  The “save” in Word does not show the network to save documents over to XP Directories.
