Well on this day in 1981 Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles. This was to be the most watched TV event ever until the funeral of Diana.

I remember it well. It was beautiful day which I spent flying my R/C gliders. Far healthier & more enjoyable than sitting in front of that blasted goggle box. Wink

Because otherwise the news media, paparazzi, et al, would be deprived of their living?

They're only figureheads & have no real power. The tourists seem to like them.  Might be a somewhat outdated concept but I still prefer what we have to the alternative. Roll Eyes

Sound words indeed, but then what would all those soldiers in funny little black hats go about guarding?  Think of the jobs man! Roll Eyes Grin We need those soldiers just in case we ever choose Britain as a tourist spot, ya know...

You mean like the Queen's Arms or King's Head? Wink

Unfortunately they've probably been renamed something like the Slug & Lettuce. Roll Eyes Hardly the same appeal is it? You can't whack a little bit of tradition & ceremony. We're very good at that when we put our minds to it.

As long as I can get one or two good pints there, I don't mind. Grin

I am wondering how us having a royal family negatively affects most of you anyway? You dont like them too bad, i doubt many of the british public cares anyway, and the chances of it being changed are slim anyway. As Doug said they are just figureheads and they bring in tourists which is always good for the country. In this day in age of dictators and el presidente's its nice to have something differant. Wink
