VIP transport.  If the president were to fly in it on a short hop, the IT would be "Air Force 1"....

Q:  What's the smallest USAF plane to have become "Air Force 1"  (or it's equivalent?)

It was an Aero Commander 500, Ike used it when campaigning for re-election. Theres even a repaint of it for Milton Schupes AC500.

I think its the USAF plane used for the personal use of the Presidential dogs, much in the same way 32 Sqn (the Royal Sqn) of the RAF has the BAe 125 to carry the Queens corgis...

like the caption says.....it's a C-9 or "VC-9"(essentially a DC-9 with the military throwing there $.02 in the designation).
Despite the Air Force one-esque paintjob, most C-9's are used for MAC flights( or...... not-so-VIP's).

The Marine Corps even has one with an accordion style, fold-down ramp, that when extended, is about 10mX3m!
The "band" travels around in it. I've seen it in person. They pulled up with, what looked like,  a giant ping-pong table in the cargo door. The crewchief yells "stand back"(OK...... I added that part for affect) and then this thing extends out, Inspector Gadget style.
The backup for AF-1 is a the 757 and after that, they have a Gulfstream or two.

.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......

VC-9s were used as AF-1 during the Clinton years. He liked visiting smaller airports and sometimes needed the smaller planes.

A couple of times Clinton even flew on smaller planes like the Gulfstreams.
