Politics Section (Read 2514 times)

I have noticed that when topics get to politiical they seem to be banned. At the same time, a good few member, including myself, enjoy discussing political matters. Would it be possible to start up a Politics section, possibly carrying some sort of warning, so people will not be offended?

not going to happen. It wouldnt matter if it was in a seperate section, people will get heated over it and would overflow to other sections. If you want to discuss politics there are many forums around the net to do so.

PLEASE READ

THERE IS NO DISCUSSION OF POLITICS OR RELIGION ON THESE FORUMS!!

THIS IS AN AVIATION SITE WITH A FEW OTHER ROOMS FOR DISCUSSION.

POLITICAL VIEWS ARE NOT WELCOMED HERE!!

THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF OTHER SITES WERE YOU CAN GET POLITICAL AND START FLAME WARS AND SEE WHO'S COUNTRY CAN PISS THE FURTHEST!

We used to allow it but with this being an international forum with ages 13 to 100, it just does not work.

And with the recent wave of bickering going on, it is not something MANY of us wish to discuss!!

PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES TO THESE FORUMS WHEN YOU SIGN UP!

Please see the Guidelines for discussing these things!!

There are other places for that, for better or for worse political discussion does not work out well here, and accordingly it is no longer allowed. I am sure you can find world politics forums in the +8 billion sites google has listed.

Said it before and I'll say it again, if you want to get into it with SimV members on "hot-button" topics, PM them. If they get tired of arguing, they can just stop replying.  Otherwise it gets out of control, and of course as tempers flare and posts get more hostile, the whole site gets tainted... the surfers who like to spoil things are far more likely to start dropping their little bombs here if they see that kind of bile-spewing; they'll feel right at home.
I've been guilty of waxing a little too philosophical in some threads; I know how easy it is to hunker down like that. It's damn near impossible to get the last word on politics or religion...and there are more productive things to do and talk about. One thing we learn as we get older is that life is way too short to waste arguing about certain things...

Well I saw a site that had no politcal forum. Then after a debate and a vote they decided to have one as a test run. SOme of the worst arguments were/are there and it is where people fall out/make friends. Personally it is very helpful and extremely interesting. People aren't the "George Bush and Tony Blair Sucks" style, but then they are pretty blunt too. In my small experience at only 18 I feel that to keep the peace it is best left out.

Anyway, the answer is no anyway so I needn't worry! Wink

On Religion in SimV:  It is perfectly acceptable to discuss ways of worshipping and praising me.

On Poilitics in SimV:  It is perfectly acceptable, appropriate, and advisable to extoll my many virtues and qualifications and to campaign for my being elevated by unanimous worldwide consensus to Supreme Leader for Life of the Known Universe.

All other discussion of politics and religion is subject to the (very limited) tolerance of mods and upgrades....

We did the same thing..
Except the other way around!
We used to allow it for a long time until many members were saying things that were pretty offensive.

We had a POLL and it came back almost 100% were in favor of not discussing politics on this forum.

So there you go!  8)

I was thinking the same. I dont actually ever remember politics being actively allowed. Petes ruling until recently was "discouraged" but not banned. Maybe there was an independant thing run by someone, but i dont ever remember there being an official poll that actually decided the fate of this. ???

If I remember correctly, politics & religion was not encouraged but not actually banned. The mods here have always been very sensible & dealt with the whole thing admirably. IMHO
That's until a few people started kicking up a fuss about them not being fair which has caused a lot of bad feeling & the present 'zero tolerance' policy. In my view a voluntary ban was always the best solution but it's not always easy to know what's acceptable as we all come from very different cultures. Roll Eyes

I also brought this up when Brensec proposed a History forum. I was originally against the idea as it's almost impossible to discuss history without mentioning these subjects. Fortunately it seems to have worked out so far as most contributors are sensible people & genuinely interested in history.

But that was ages ago, cant we have another vote with the current users. Plus, in the wake of cetain unmentionables politics has become part of everybodies daily life. I reckon the results of a new poll would be very different Wink.

If you take into account some recent activities on the forums and especially some rising tensions and people who feel the forums have taken a change for the worst. Then I don't think that something like politics which has the tendency to stirr things really up will have any chance of being accepted let alone be supported. I think once more that the banning of politics is really good!

Ow yeah.. I like to debate about politics too! I do so with my friends but not in public on these very forums Grin

Well you have asked about "where" & "when" these discussions took place? Here are the answers.

As you can see Woody, it does not matter how long you have been here, but how much time you actually spend here  Wink

See here from past conversations about this subject!

Pete asked all of us about how we all felt about discussing international War and here it is!
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=gen;action=display;num=104...

Scott "Hype" also questioned politics & religion!
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=gen;action=display;num=106...

And once again, the subject was brought up again in October of 2004! This is the most recent. As you can see out of 43 total votes, 83% do not wish to discuss, 9.3% did want to discuss and 6.9% did not care to discuss politics.
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=gen;action=display;num=109...

As you can see, over and over new people question as to "Why"? Please read all the comments posted by All the members in the above threds and you will see why these rules have been put into place. Some of you newer members might also get to "know" some of the older members a bit better too! The reason is that the majority do not want to discuss politics, religious beliefs and War. It has a proven track record of dividing the forums and reeking havoc among members. They are topics that eventually bring negative comments to these forums and they are subjects that will be not be welcomed here.

Mistral. Please accept the fact that discussing religion & politics invariably leads to rising tempers, insults & flame wars. This is not the way we do things at Simviation. As has been mentioned before, there are plenty of specialised sites where you can do this to your heart's content. Wink

Basically, it boils down to this:

This is one of the oldest and most respected flight sim sites on the web.  About the only 2 that may be older are Avsim amd Flightsim and I'm not too sure about Flightsim.  This site has lasted so long and achieved that recognition for a reason.  That reason is the guidance of the webmaster, Pete.  While other sites have come and gone, and degraded into payware clearing houses, Pete has toed the line and kept his site remarkable similar to what it was when I visted here first, almost 6 years ago.

As members, your voice in this site counts, and is listened to.  But also, you need to realize that Pete knows what he is doing and there is a reason for everything he does here, no matter how unusual it may seem.  You may not always know what goes on behind the scenes, but be certain that Pete does nothing that is not in this site's best interest.  Banning Politics and Religion is not some ego thing, and he doesn't get a power trip out of it.  It is simply the best way to ensure the quality of this site.

It's not going to happen, so just let it go.

Hey Guys, has anybody seen all the great forums that Pete has given us here.  Shocked

I can't believe it!
They are so informative!!

I came here looking for an answer about flight simulator and what a site!!
Everything from repainting to tweaking & designing and that's just the tip of the iceberg! He has also has given us forums to ask questions about all the flight simulator stuff. I can't believe all the different forums!! He has even given us a place to sit back and relax and just talk called the Café and General!
Also, there are screenshot forums, Real aviation and history boards; there is a monthly contest!!
There are sections to ask questions about software, hardware, building your own cockpit!
He even has a few boards for site feedback and suggestions!

Gee, what a generous person this guy Pete is!

I can't believe ALL THIS SITE HAS TO OFFER!!
And to think about it, I came here for AVIATION PURPOSES!!!

Thanks Pete for offering a few other forums where I can visit and get to converse about things with people who share my same hobby!!  Grin

Keep up the great work!!

the best way i can think of putting it. Its not what people want, its what people think is best for the masses. The majority agree that its not a good idea to discuss politics here, just to keep this place as friendly as it always has been. That will never be changed no matter how much one or two people may want it to be.

Some of my good freinds have vastly different political views and religeous beliefs, but we get along just fine. We even discuss those subjects occasionally, because we know eachother very well, and we know how to do this without offending eachother. This is in one-on-one conversation, not a public forum. These sorts of discussions are a bad idea here because you can only know someone so well via the internet, and you never know who will read your posting. What some people can discuss openly, and calmly might cause someone else to become quite angery, and vice-versa. So,  I feel that the current rule is the way to go- don't even allow such conversations to develope.

My 'run in' though, was nothing to do with politics or religion was it, it was to do with him being incredibly imature and arrogent, and i short, having a go at my parents?!

What is the official definition of politics? A topic which people may voice some opinion upon, because from what i can see thats this sites definition of it.
Sorry to sound like im having ago Pete, this is your site and i know it must be really annoying and insulting to have 'my sort' on your turf, making a fuss over something that you have been incredibly generous with, and done an awesome job. Im really not trying to critisize, i just think that people enjoy discussing Politics, and other similarly controversial l issues.

Perhaps you could consider a new poll to find out the opinion of the masses? At the same time its your site, so you make the rules. So this is going to be the last i say upon the matter.

Cheers, Mike
