Got a video capture/tuner card recently, and I'm having a devil of a time installing it. The drivers install properly, Device Mgr (WinXP) sees the thing and its drivers, but I can't start the installer .exe from the disc or the mfr.'s site.
They recommended checking for IRQ conflict; saw that the slot I selected does share with another, so I moved it to the one slot that is on INT D all by itself in the default "Auto" BIOS setting, and tried again. No go... the installer starts, but quickly shuts down with no error message (rare indeed for XP!). Tried manually reserving IRQ for that slot in BIOS with same results.
???
I may not be entirely correct on the manual settings, so I'm seeking input from experienced PCI device installers. For now, I'm back to "Auto"...
Other thing I'm not 100% sure about is whether or not enabling "Plug'n'Play OS" option in BIOS will help... right now it's disabled; don't remember if that's the default or not.
I'm probably missing something basic, but if anyone's curious:
Epox EP-8KRAI KT600 MB
PCI slot 1: empty (didn't want to crowd gfx card in AGP slot)
slot 2:SoundBlaster 5.1 card (installed without a hitch)
slot 3:empty
slot 4: new card (Compro VideoMate TV gold plus)
slot 5: empty
My system meets the required specs for this thing, so it's not that... probably PCI-related...?
I'll be researching elsewhere, but I'm hoping some of you guys may have some advice...

If win XP recognizes it (and it does via device manager), then the device should work.
Your device is installed properly, it seems since windows has reconized both the driver and the hardware.
what exactly does this installer do if it doesn't install drivers? It may be a bad installer or it may be too old to work with XP.
I don't think you have a problem with the IRQ or the bios or the PCI bus. BTW, you can enable plu and play OS if you want (windows is one), but i think its more of a problem with the installer than with hardware/bios.

Thanks; I may try this again with PnP enabled.
The installeris supposed to install the drivers and various utilities; the interface, etc... on one attempt it threw some icons on the desktop but they didn't do anything.
The mfr. linked me to the latest version- it did not work. I am baffled, as I've had no trouble before with installing a PCI device.
It sure seems logical that if the system "sees" the thing on its slot, etc. ,everyhting should work. But without the application itself working, I can't use the damn thing.

What card and what error message did you get?
I recently installed a capture card for a friend and the website had many different install programs for different windows versions.
It sounds like you have the wrong version of the installer to me. It may not be compatible with SP2 for example. Also, the capture card I installed used a particular install program, depending on what exact version of card it was, and the bottom line was whether or not the card had the video out on top or on bottom! (version difference of the actual hardware).
It took me quite a while to sort it out. But it was a software problem.
I've never seen PCI - IRQ conflicts on modern systems using Win XP, auto setting has been my motto for PCI slots.
