Yeah, but Kobain had no musical talent what-so-ever.  Should have just been a poet.  It makes me so mad when people praise his music.  He was a horrible guitarist.

I hate Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. Tongue

Now the comments about Kurt Cobain having no musical talent...you may not like the guy or the music, but it's a bit naive and spiteful to say he had no talent.  So, he wasn't a great guitarist, but he played with a lot of feeling and devotion and was a great singer.  I defy you to listen to 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' without being impressed or moved at the end of the song.  Infact, the whole of the MTV Unplugged performance has perfect singing.  Cry

Also, when Nirvana made it big, they were the only band of there kind to make it big...they were surrounded by bands like Guns N' Roses and they helped contribute to these bands downfall (I firmly believe Axl Rose hated KC just cos his music wa more popular).  The guitar playing was simple, but it was also very melodic and he used off-time strumming atterns, whoch makes t actually quite hard to play Nirvana songs and sing them at the same time, cos it's two different rythmsas well as two different notes.  Kurt Cobain was a talented musician and ruined himself with drugs, it's undeniable.  You don't have to like him or his music, but you have to see the talent, you just have to. Smiley

And Dave Grohl (Nirvana drummer, now Foo Fighters frontman) is also a very talented musician.  I was very sceptical of the Foos at first, thinking they were just the 'Nirvana drummers band', but they're not.  Dave doesn't want to be know as the drummer from Nirvana, he wants to be known for the Foo Fighters, which is pretty respectable considering Nirvana were the bggest band in the world at one point.

I'm sorry I still don't see the talent in Kurt Cobain.  I've learned to play five or six of his songs to prove this very point to people, and I picked each one up in less than two minutes.  I didn't find any problem singing them while playing, and I normally have problem doing this.

He should have been a poet.  I'll give him that, he can write poetry.  But music?  No.

The main problem for Nirvana with me is that I can differentiate between music I like that's good, music that I don't like but is still good, and music that is bad.  Some of Nirvana's songs, the ones that they play all the time on the radio, are terrible.  Just absolutely atrocious.  Some of the most monotonous (read: MONOTONE), undistinguished pieces I've ever heard.

I understand how so many people felt drawn to Kurt, people in a similar life situation, but god his music was bad.  I'm not saying he didn't have any talent, but the music was just bad-some of it was tolerable, but too much of it has me banging my head, and not the good kind.

The grunge scene?  Nirvana?  Nirvana didn't consider themselves grunge, they considered themselves punk. Wink  The media labelled them grunge in a derogatory manner, don't be fooled.  Real grunge is Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains....don't tell me those bands have no talent, because that is in now way true.

Oh, and....real grunge bands never wore flannel shirts. Grin

Godsmack, the Beatles, Greenday, Pantera, Blink 182 and all similar bands.

Whiny or angry little people with no voice talent.

Frank Sinatra, Emma Shapplin, Sasha Lazard and even Rammstein!  Now they have voice!  Not everyone has the right to be a singer.  You have to have the gift first. Tongue If only we could get an opera singer to join a hard rock band...

I will admit The 5.6.7.8's don't  exactly qualify as a great vocal band, but they do have catchy little diddies! Grin

YOU TAKE THAT BACK!!!

Actually, if thats how you feel, fine but your wrong. Pearl Jam has been one of my favorite bands since Ten came out, and the 6 albums after that only got better as time went on. Try listening to any of the songs on Binaural and tell me that they didnt require loads of talent. Granted, you couldn't really call them grunge anymore, but at one time they were a Grunge band and have more talent than I could ever wish for.

Soundgarden: Their music followed the same progression as PJ - it only got better as time went on. I'm not as big a fan of them as I am of Pearl jam (Cornells voice... sometimes) but theres no denying that they were oozing with talent.

Alice in Chains: I'm not to familier with their music, most of it is a little heavey for my taste, so I dont feel like I should comment other than to say: TALENT.

And no, Nirvana weren't really grunge. The media seemed to think at the time that any band from the Seattle area was grunge regardless of the sound. Thats why Stone Temple Pilots, though they had a sound comparble to the style of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam have never been officialy classed as a grunge band.

Whew... I think this is my longest post ever. We finally found something I feel strongly about. Wink

You people are crazy.  I love you all the more for it.  Anyone who thinks that The Beatles or Nirvana wrote crap music, is devoid of musical credability.  Not liking their music is one thing, but not recognizing musical talent like that is aurally absurd.  I despise Pearl Jam and The Smashing Pumkins with a fierce passion but I begrudgingly acknowledge that, unlike Jessica Simpson or Avril Lavigne, they are talented musicians.  Tool is freakin' awesome but Maynard makes me mad.  He sucks AND he blows, AND I HATE HIM.  Great singing voice though.  Oh, this thread was a terrible idea...

Funny, I thought it was a grrreat idea!  Queue Tony the Tiger y'all. Roll Eyes I just listen to music I enjoy is all.  I could care less about lyrics, talent etc.  Britney Spears may be a rotten person, but if I liked her music, I'd listen to it.  Personally, I think it's boring.  Boycotting music is stupid. (So says I.) I loved "Dragosta Din Tei".  Was it a dumb song?  Yes.  Was it particularly unique?  Not really.  But it was dang fun to listen to.  Before that stupid fat kid ruined it, tho'. There are bands I don't like, but I recognize their talent.  Like Rush for instance.  I don't like them, mostly because of their frontman's voice, but they have loads of talent, so I wouldn't put them down as a bad I hate.  The Beatles...  Anyone who says their talentless deserves a pop in the nose.  Wink

Cobain had no musical talent.  But anyone who says he couldn't write lyrics, needs to take 10th grade English again.  The man was a great poet, but a bad musican.

Maybe Cobain didn't have the world's fastest fingers or a crystal clear perfect pitch singing voice.  But just beneath the wailing surface, all his notes were perfectly placed and all his string bending was exactly as it should be.  You can't write music that catchy without musical talent, (teen spirit is one of his mediocre songs I think...)  His music is like an everlasting gobbstopper, seems simple, but after sucking it, reveals layers of complexity!   Emotional intensity, lyrics with real substance, I don't like to throw the word genius around but every song in the Nirvana library is golden pop rock bliss not felt since The Beatles or Pink Floyd. Maybe I'm biased though, I have lived here in Seattle for over 20 years...

You don't need that to have talent.

People remember him because he died mysteriously.  Offically he killed himself, but some think he was murdered...  Even without the conspiracies, dead rock stars are remembered better than those that lived through an era.  Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison just to name a few.  They're remembered because they died in their prime.  There are bands and artists that were just as big and popular as they were, but they're not remembered like the three J's, Holly, Lennon, Elivs...  Well, maybe not Elivs.  Roll Eyes...  because they didn't die.  Tongue  I could probably go on, but I think my brain is smoldering.  Wink

Sadly right about that.  My love of Nirvana was at it's height before he died.  I was kind of pissed when I heard he offed himself, and then all the controversial "evidence" surface and the whole thing got ridiculous, so I left it alone and discounted new fans out of hand.  But I seem to be getting off topic.  It just made me a little frustrated to see The Beatles and Nirvana on what is supposed to be a list of bad music.  But I'll be the first one to admit I can be a little pushy with my opinion.  Maybe I should just leave this particular thread alone; I'm not as easily offended religiously or politically as I am musically.

All I know is that the former members of Alice In Chains and Soundgarden should grab some old stage equipment and beat the saccarin, nasally snot right out of all boy bands, after they gut and filet the Bareneked Ladies and gang rape Jessice simpson. Then maybe a public stoning for that Ashlee simpson thing with the nose and dyed black hair. I hope the clip of her buggering up on SNL never goes away as it showcases what passes for talent in that world. Ouch, where's my airsickness bag?! Don't get me started!

I feel just as passionately about music as you.  Religion and politics are things I care little about.  I love music, and if you ask any of my close friends, I could talk for hours about it.

I love The Beatles as much as the next guy, but it only confused me when people put them down as a band they don't like.  "How could you hate The Beatles?!?!??"  You know?  That type of reaction.

I guess one reason I never liked Nirvana is because I always viewed them as one of the bands that killed metal...  As crappy as some of that music was, I think that by the end of the 80s it was beginning to mature, and the entrance of grunge music and the "Seatle sound" stopped it from growing.

Hey, this isn't a thread about bad music as a fact.  Its a thread about opinions.  We're not the hacks at Rolling Stone!  Grin  They wouldn't know good music if it kicked them in the groin.  Tongue

Right you are on many counts, but I think metal killed itself.  It is reviving quite well though, I'd say.  While I love Heavy Metal more than most types of music, Metallica's black album I think changed people's perspective of metal to a more mainstream type of sound, while also not being nearly as hardcore as real metal should be (the nail in the coffin).  Pantera had a pretty good following in the 90's but couldn't keep it stiff long enough.  But I would say Nine Inch Nails, Korn, and System of a Down kept rock good and heavy, without being as predictable as Megadeth or Halford.  Dillinger also rocks, and Fantomas is the best thing to happen to Metal since Master of Puppets.  Kids these days are more interested in image than talent though, so anything "truly" good will always be niche, I think.

I think when Metallica tasted success with "One" they just wanted more.  (I don't think they sold out in making a video though, but it did kill them.)  It happens with most acts.  Get some time in the lime light, and you don't want the light to fade.  So you try and commericalize yourself for more attention.  It doesn't work out nicely.  I mean, Metallic's work when downhill quick, right?  I was hoping that Garage Inc. would bring them back to their old heyday, but...  St. Anger...  Undecided No.

I've never been a big fan of New Metal.  Guns n' Roses and Skid Row is some of the newest metal I listen to.  Cheesy  All that non-scensical screaming...  Never liked it.  Though a friend turned me on to In Flames, and seeing them at OzzFest turned me into a fan.  Smiley

Well, kids have always been interested in looks.  Its just that the quality of the music has gone down over the years.  Wink

Cheers Leadbones.  I think you and I will agree on more in the future.  Grin

Right again you are!  Methinks yer a bit older than me, but I could be wrong.  Regardless, your palate is definently more refined than most and I can respect that.  If you've never heard Fantomas, you should most certainly check them out, I think you could easily get into "The Director's Cut"  or "Suspended Animation."  It consists of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, others) Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle) Dave Lombardo (Slayer) and King Buzz Osbourne (The Melvins)  As far as recent metal goes, it doesn't get any better than Fantomas in my humble opinion.

Looking at your profile, it says you are 26.  You have almost a full ten years on me, considering I'm only going to be 17 at the end of the week.  Roll Eyes

If you say its so good, I will have to look into these Fantomas.  I looked them up on the interweb, and they seem a little weird, so I'm a bit septical...  But I'll take a listen anyway.  Smiley

Wow, usually that sort of opinion on music is reserved for the jaded old-school metal head.  There is such thing as "sensical" yelling you know, it just depends on who and why.  Rare indeed that it is used to GOOD effect, but nobody beats Mike Patton.  The voice is just another instrument, some only play one note, others use the whole fret.

Old-school metal is the only true kind.  Wink  Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica (before black..), Megadeth (before "Risk"...) and of course, Motorhead.  Because Lemmy is God.  Grin  All the screaming these kids are doing today isn't my cup o' tea.  I like to understand what they are screaming, if they're going to scream.  I don't think anyone could beat Rob Halford or Bruce Dickenson when it comes to the original metal scream.  8)
