I'm looking to replace my '92 318i, nothing particular wrong with it, I just want something bigger & more comfy, also, I'm sick of gearchanges, an automatic is a must.
Fuel consumption isn't much of an issue, most of the week, it'll sit at work gathering dust.
I've found this on my travels......
Quote:
1994 M Reg BMW 730i V8
4 Doors, Automatic, Saloon, Petrol, 237,000 miles, Metallic Gunmetal grey . airconditioning, fog lights, frontseat(s) electric adjustable, leather interior, windows front + rear electric, alarm remote controlled, automatic, Body Coloured Bumpers, Central Door Locking, Electric Adjustable Mirror, Electric Slide/Tilt Steel Sunroof, metallic painted, mirrors electric, Passenger Air Bag, Power-Assisted Steering, ABS, Adjustable seats, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Climate Control, Computer, Cruise control, Driver airbag, Electrically adjustable seats, Full service history, Head restraints, Leather upholstery, Metallic paintwork, Multi function steering wheel, Park distance control, Power assisted steering, Radio/Cassette, Traction control. Full service History, Full light grey Leather upholstery, Loads of Bills + old Mot's, MOT Jan 2006, 18 " Multispoke alloys, Immaculate condition. On private plate which i may leave on the car subject to negotiation. You need to see and drive this to appreciate how good it is. you would never think it has done the miles. £3,495.
Or, as I've been offered £1500 for my car, £2k for the above!
I want a large, comfortable car, automatic, and I don't do many miles per week. Also, I've always liked these cars since my boss paid £46,000 for his 735i back in 1994!
Seems a hell of alot of car for the money, I'm aware of plenty of 250,000+mile BMW's not to mention Fords etc,I'm not too bothered about the mileage, its a modern car, very well looked after. To my eyes, built to take it.
What would you do?

I dont see what the problem is. You want this car, i say go test drive it or one simmilar see if it meets your expectations if so buy it. The only down side is, since you dont do that much driving would it be worth the money? thats a personal choice really.

If it's what you want then I would get it. No point in wishing you had in a few months time.

This is what I want to hear !
The main reason I'm thinking of a car like a 7 series is simply that I won't use it that much, my theory being, it should last and be ideal for the occasional blasts down to Somerset.
My head says "no" my heart says "yes", I've driven the car, and its better than the description! frankly, I'm surprised the guy has'nt had the mileage wound back 150k, you would'nt know if he had from its condition....
Its something like that or, a 325i/328i for similar money, more than likely, I'd drive such a car like a hooligan where the "7" just isn't that type of car , and, I don't want to drive it fast, its great to "waft along" in.
Decisions decisions......

I would personally disagree with can't go wrong with a BMW, I had one and it sucked!
However the 7 series is v.comfy and if it is what you want then go for it

Believe me mate, I have 14 gears in my truck, each one requires a prod of the clutch pedal. At the end of a week trawling the UK, my left foot says to me "Automatic? - Yes please!"
Alas, on calling today, the cars sold.
but, I am sold on a 7 series , so I'll see what other examples I can come up with for not too much money.
Interesting people have had problems with BMW's my current one is 12 years old, still on its factory clutch! and nearing 175k miles.

When I had a Scania the only time I used the clutch was to start off and for the splits, the rest of the time I just "fed" it in to the next gear, to change down a quick blip in neutral then into the lower gear. It saved a lot of leg ache in London!

I've been told not to do that, although I know what you mean. Interestingly, our "04" reg trucks don't like the "skipping the clutch" but, the older "W" reg ones thrive on it!
I've got an 04.....

Well, today I've tracked down two examples, a 1994 740i and a 1995 728i.
Both £3495, the 740 has done 187,000miles, the 728i 199,000
The 740i had plenty of "go" much more than the 2.8 engined car alas, the transmission was'nt right, jerky upshifts, not a trait of these cars!
On the reverse, the 728i had what looked like a poorly fitted front wing, accident repair me thinks.
I continue with my quest, I apologise now for bumping this thread back up in a while.
No doubt in a few weeks, I'll be reporting I've purchased a 1.0 Litre Nissan Micra or similar!

Thats exactly the 7 series style I would like if I could afford one - after that one I think they start to get a little too rounded.
A great car scania & I hope you get a lot of pleasure out of driving it.

PS: I prefer yours without the silver trim around the windows - i'm stuck with the silver trim on my 5 & it sucks!!

Yeah- the only way to drive around town or on some fast country roads.
But if your doing a long motorway journey then the autobox is the only way to go for comfort - especially when you get stuck in a 20 mile tailback crawling along at 5mph - stop, start, stop, start.

Yes, the one in "The Transporter" was indeed a 750iL (although in the film its refered to as both 760i and 735i)
Manual is ideal for a sporty car, a large "limo" like a 7 is more suited to an Auto, I feel I have the best of both worlds, a semi-automatic, well, I will have come next monday.

550 miles into ownership and I can honestly say my expectations have been exceeded by a margin I never expected, I really have gone up into a new league of travel !
My old e36 3 series was such a good car, I doubted I'd be so critical of it now, when I look back!
The 728 on the Motorway down to Somerset was fantastic, its as smooth & quiet @ 110MPH as it is @ 60MPH, even the 235/50/18 front & 255/45/18 rear tires don't intrude with road noise.
One slight gremlin, I had a weird grinding noise on full lock, when moving slowly, I was fearful I'd bought a dog!
The trouble was an ill fitting mudflap catching the tyre!
Its firmly rivited in place now, problem solved!
34MPG was my motorway average !!! roughly, I reckon I'm getting 22 - 27mpg round town, not bad for a 2.8i 5 Speed Automatic near 2 ton barge!!!
Sorry I hav'nt posted any further pictures yet, Its been a busy week, yesterday me & Shannon went to Alton Towers
http://www.alton-towers.co.uk/themepark/
the cars now absolutely filthy (alas, a downside of it being Black) I'll get the car washed & post some photo's this coming weekend.
As long as I can stop myself from going off elsewhere in it!!
No doubt , the novelty will wear off, for the time being, I'm a happy bunny for the first time in a very long time.
Sorry about the over endulgent post btw!
