Hello,
I'm looking at purchasing MS Flight Sim 2002 Standard.  I have a Pentium II computer, 256 RAM, 48x CD-rom, with Windows 98 SE.  Will the game work?  How is the performance?  Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!

Technically yes, but you probably would have stuttering graphics and poor framerates. And a graphics card would be helpful.

I got fs2k2 when i had similar specs to yours, like CCCP says, its really slow - not good enough to play on. i just kept the game anyway until i got a new PC. you could try doing what it says in the booklet- lowering AI traffic, setting weather as clear.  But i'd think its not worth buying it if you're going to play it like that...

G-EORGE makes a valid point. At first i had a 950mhz processor and 256 mb ram computer, and to yield any kind of decent performance from fs2002 i had to lower most attributes to their minimum. This is okay if you like ifr/night flying where scenery doesnt really come into it, but as visual flying is more fun, having this kind of computer can seriously lower your enjoyment of a game. the game will stutter and freeze, which is kind of annoying if youre landing  Wink. If you want to get better performance, i suggest either buying a new computer or updating your original with a new proccessor and graphics card. My computer now has a  2.8ghz pentium 4 and a Nvidia Geforce Fx 5200, a good graphics card. I can play fs2002 on full graphics, with everything cranked up to the max. i hope this helps

cheers

Yeah, ok...thanks.  Smiley
I just bought it yesterday on eBay.  But...good news...I should be getting a new PC by September.  AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 512 RAM, 160 GB HD, etc.  That should do it, I hope.  Of course, when I get it, I'm gonna get MS Flight Sim 2004!Grin
Thanks again for the help!

I just thought of something...
I downloaded Jane's WWII Fighters Combat Simulations, and  it ran great!  The loading times where a little slow, and when there where more than 25 planes in the air at the same time, it gets slow and sticky.  So, how does Jane's WWII Fighters Combat Simulations compare to MS Flight Simulator 2002 Standard?  That would be awesome if it ran just as good! Grin

unfortunately, no. fs contains autogen scenery and mesh textures which make your processor bleed, as opposed to most combat flight simulators which focus on the dogfights and flying rather than scenery

Oh...
Well, is there a way to turn off most of the extra scenery?  Like all buildings, trees and stuff, except for the airport?   I don't know how this sim is set up...just a desparate thought. Wink
It makes sense about Jane's not kaving as much detail on the ground.  The only "real" detail was the planes, tanks, trucks, and buildings.  Everything else was very undetailed.
Too bad. Cry

there is a way to turn off the autogen trees and buildings- but the graphics look c*** unless you fly at a decent altitude Undecided. There isnt a way to turn off mesh though- so it will probably murder your computer Sad

Well, I got FS2002 in the mail 2 days ago.  I installed it, and it runs great! Smiley  Probably not as fast as it should, but fast enough for me to have fun. Wink  I have the ATC percentage on 0%, and I have to have the weather on "clear", or else it goes very slow. Roll Eyes  The load times are not that bad either.
All in all, this sim works well, and is my favorite! Grin

I got FS2002 working on a Pentium II 350 Mhz before I got a new computah with decent frame rates 10fps-20fps. I was surprised because FS2000 run way too slow.

You should be able to play FS2002 decently on a ±700 MHz processor, 256 Mb Ram, 32 Mb graphics card puter.
I play it on a 450 Mhz, 310 Mb RAM, 64 Mb G-force 2 puter and it works fine. Even with weather and AI traffic on if you set the resolution to 800x600 or at 1180x720 (?) if the settings are set to low.
I think you can get a puter like that for about $200 on ebay or sumtin ???
