Thats nice!  Reminded me of this test video this guy from Boeing brought in at this Aviation Maintenance Symposium we had few months ago.  It was a 737 just like the one in the shot... it was a 30 or so crosswind just like the one in the shot... and the pilot crabbed in just like in the shot.  In the end, the pilot hit full right rudder just to get the plane straight.  Even with the full deflection of the rudders, it still came in crooked and by the way it bounced left and right on the runway you know the mechanics will be pulling an all nighter Wink

Cheers,
RB

A standard profile in a crosswind like that will consist of a crab just like the one seen in the screen shot.  I think the autoland flew the approach correctly although I'm not sure what the crosswind limits (if any) are for an autoland.  As described above, typically on an approach like that, rudder is kicked in to point the nose toward centerline during the flare or right after the mains touch down.  Main landing gear are designed to withstand the stress of touching down at an angle.

Just search the net for some pics and/or video of approaches into the old Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong.  Seeing 747s do this is quite a sight.  What it must have been like for the passengers... Shocked

Just a FYI...

There is a current discussion going on at www.airliners.net about crosswind landings and airliners.  A few pilots have offered their input on standard technique.   Smiley
