A pretty long time ago, I posted here that I wanted to buy an alienware desktop.
Some SimVier came and told me that Ibuypower desktops are better an cheaper.

but after searching threw the internet, I came across a page in flightsim.com that had a review of the alienware are 51 computer.

It says that they tried every possible computer including the Dell Dimension XPS and 8300 and it didnt even come close to the alienwares capability.

if you wanna see it come here.
http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/review/alien.htm

I dont know about you, but if flightsim says it
Im buying an alienware.

Im not, im not going to take the time to read that article...sorry. My first question was whats in each of these boxes. I didnt find any specs that were very visible/c;lear? If they bought the alieware and XPS stock(uncustomized) the alienware will probably win because it probaby has better parts off  the starting gate. Ill read through it later and see if they provide and info as to why its better. Because if I have the same exact parts how will it change if dell builds it or Alienware(or me). Alienware may have some optimizations they do but those are probably not that hard to find or figure out.

Reminds me of the old "I saw it on the internet it must be true."

Is it heck! - Simviation nutter says so and knows it!  Grin

Alienware et al are great if you have deep pockets.

Shallower pockets and some knowledge of what to buy & what not to buy, along with the ability to build it yourself (or, a friend) will result in a PC that will far better any Alienware.

When you buy a pre-assembled PC, you pay for its construction, also, the warranty, telephone support etc etc etc Money far better spent on the components inside the PC!

Example, Alienware build a PC based on two SLI 6600GT's great performance, but, a single PCI-e 6800GT will out perform two SLI'd 6600's yet cost a similar amount.
Effectively, the alienware PC would have been far better with a single PCI-e 6800GT ,leaving one slot free for a future upgrade i.e. another 6800GT.....

You don't get the best value or specs from manufactured PC's you just make them , the manufacturers, money.

Mmm, careful... did I remember seeing Alienware ads on Flightsim some time back...

The more I read the review I thought "this could have been written by a representative of Alienware", particularly by the constant "is better than Dell" about just about everything...

And there's no commercial interest in the review either is there...

Dude, all you gotta do is get the same component's that are listed on that page and get someone to build it up for you. It'll work out far cheaper and you might even be able to spend the few extra bob on something like a better keyboard and mouse!

Just remember one thing... Flightsim advertises Alienware on their website. This means that have an agreement with Alienware. Think about it, if you, as a Webmaster had an agreement with a company, wouldn't you try to peddle their products to your customers/ users?

Like I said, think about it!

I wanted an Alienware computer to use for flightsim 2004 I couldn't afford their prices so I built my first computer. It has cost me £250 for
Asus p4c800 Deluxe  Mother board with HT
Pentium p4 3.0Ghz CPU
Maxtor 40Gig 7200rpm hd drive
Sound blaster Audigy sound card
2x 512Mb Kingston pc3200 Ram
500w Power supply
Dvd rom
3.5 floppy
Nvidea Fx5600 256Mb Graphics card

The graphics card is to be changed/upgraded when funds permit.
I have learned alot from building a computer, asking questions here and in shops, most of my computer parts are second hand hence the low build price, I would recomend building it yourself you will get the computer YOU want at a price YOU can afford and if it ever goes wrong you will have no problems replacing parts.
Just for reference the Alienware comp uses Fx5950Ultra see how "poor" that card is now

If your not part of the answer    your part of the problem!   &&I've often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can't get my wife to go swimming. &&&&

Great system you've built there!

The CPU has the H.T. bit, not, the Motherboard.  Wink

I used to have a 128MB FX5600 in my machine (specs below) adding a 6800LE has utterly transformed it into an Uber gaming rig!  8) Grin

For your next card, don't worry about 256MB too much, any geforce 6600 128MB for example will easily out perform a 256MB Ati 9800 / FX5950Ultra! - Its not the RAM that gets the results, its the graphics processor.
Obviously, if funds permit when you upgrade, go for a 256MB card, but, if its a choice of a 256MB 6800, or, a 128MB 6800GT then the 128MB card would be the better choice imho.

Well that was me.

IBP desktops are CUSTOM made systems, basicly exactly the same as doing it yourself. They are cheep, relyable, and they have really good reviews.

Alienware are excellent computers, but they are mainstreem meaning that O/Cing the processer will not be an option, and you have the astronomical build fee.

Alienwares are overpriced. way overpriced.

Show me any alienware PC and I can build one that will outporform one for the same price. Granted it may not look as nice, but trust me  when I say the only thing that needs to look good is the image on the moniter.

Well i've got a 3.8GHz Alienware Area -51 beeing built for me at the moment so my view is a bit biased towards Alienware.
As long as its a good system i dont think it matters how it was built and who built it... costs come down to personal preference and tastes...
But i bet loads of you will disagree with that! Wink
