Sorry to hark about this again, BUT...

Today it froze 3 times.
Then just now while here on the net, a screeching noise came out of the box, the screen went dark blue with vertical blackish thin bands, (BUT it was STILL RUNNING), and said :-

".... shut-down to avoid damage to PC, start it again and if it happens again   bla bla bla bla...."

So I rebooted and it works OK. The MBProbe shows temps as mobo 31 & cpu 44.

After the recent freezes and shutdowns, I removed and put back with paste the CPU & Fan, ans same with all cards, Ram chips, and all cables (minus paste).

Could the screech come from a fan or the HD? They work now.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Unlikely the hdd, probably a fan, you should look at them while they are running, see if they appear slow or stopped altogether.  Be careful with the case open and the power on!

Ya that and what kind of thermopaste did you use on the CPU as cheeper ones will make the problem worse. Also whats your CPU clock as 44C is a tad high (my pressy isnt even that bad and youve all seen my sig) So anyway it might also be time to replace the casefans (unless you useing a dell in which case forget it) and also a copper heatsink???

Edit: oh sorry didnt read you sig. The AMD makes sense to be that hot, but at that speed ???

Actully AMDs are a OC choice a lot of  the time for low temps. Sounds like hes on an AXP with stock HSF. Screeching may be cpu fan slowing and breaking causing cpu to overheat so you get shut down message.

" HSF & AXP " what on earth is that?

Anyway it works now fine, just as it did after the similar problems a few weeks ago, untill next time I guess, and untill I can afford an upgrade ??

Have backed up all vitals, and will do, today, the whole HD on CDs again.

Both fans are spinning, no breaking up apparent, & CPU rpm changes now & then to 4,017, 4040, 3999 etc.

Case fan not metered.

And guess what? this morning CPU 31, Mobo 25.

Thanx all

HSF=Heatsink and fan
AXP=Athlon XP

Does the GFX card even have a fan?
