I dl a file yesterday and it turned out to be a Worm. Most of my programs( AIM, MSN Messenger, Explorer) come up with an error that says:

The Program does not have a file assosiated with it for performing this action. Create an assosiated file in the Control Panel.

What can I do to get this worm out.

Please help!!

It would depend what you've got, since they've all for the most part got different removal instructions.

I have no clew into what type it is. anything I try to open, it wont let me execute anything. I had went to Microsoft and ran a virus and worm detector and it came up  negative. But I no its a worm because when I opened that .exe program a MSDos screen popped up and started to go haywire, then the comp shut down. the only thing I can use is the Internet. You need to find out what the problem is.  Run your antivirus program.  (If you're not running one, come to my house so I can slap you.)

Once you run the program, if it doesn't clean itself, then find out what you've got and come back here.  If you can tell me what you've got I'll be able to help you remove it.

Spyware removers deal with spyware. Worms are not spyware.

A "very good" antivirus program wouldn't have let the file get on and do so much damage that it resulted in a reformat. Wink

I just had 2 or 3 worms and trojans last night.... was wondering why comp was a little warmer..... But a Reformat? Just use Trend Micro with Norton..... that works pretty good tells you security holes and all, the best part..... Trend Micro is free! Cheers, Gunny

Actually you need both spyware programs and a good antivirus. The best security move is to have more than one good spyware program. Many times one will detect problems that the other won't and vice versa.

If you want to be super secure try out a program called "Ultimate Boot CD". It allows you to run AV programs from a CD without loading your OS. If you compile the CD from an uninfected computer then there's no way a virus or worm can hide from that type of scan. A good online virus scanner is likewise as good but I'd suggest having a high speed connection for those unless you have a few days to run your scan.

Texas_Raiders, you sir need some improved security on that machine.  Run ,don't walk, down to your local computer store and get a copy of Mc Affee or Norton AV. Grin It'd also help to run your Windows Update until it says there's nothing left to download.
