Would anyone be intrested in setting up a team to creat a totally new add-on (freeware) for CFS2 to add some more life into the sim??

Heres what i'm thinking,

Since the WW1 era has been pretty much ignored by developers apart from the AER group and MR. S. Green and Bortdafarm (sorry for spelling if its wrong). Also since CFS3 is having its own WW1 expansion done for it, then why not CFS2??

I'm not sure how many people here would be intrested in doing this as most of you are engaged in other projects, real life or just dont know how to build stuff, but i think it should be done.

What we would need if this was to go ahead is some plane builders (Gmax or FSDS), people to build some airfields with authentic buildings, someone who knows how to use Ground2k so that the trenches could be put in..i've tried with FSSC and well..it leaves alot to be desired and lastly some people who can write missions.

I know it would be alot of work to take on but at the moment its all talk because i dont know if anyone else wants to do it.

Well what do you say??

I'm afraid I don't have the skills to contribute much -- unless there's some tedious scutwork to be done. But I'd be very interested in seeing something like this. Actually, looking at those wip europe textures made me want to get to grips with the mision builder to come up with some kind of WWI campaign. So, good luck.

BTW, there are some bits and pieces here that might get you started

They're FSDS models.

The first one is a Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter, single seater, of the French Air Service.  Actually, the French were the largest users and builders of the 1-1/2 Strutter.

The second is a Nieuport 4, of the Russian Imperial Air Service.

Depending on how detailed you want the models, I like them oldies...

As for detail, the exteriour dosn't have to be ultra detailed, as long as it looks good and real then its fine. As for the VC i love em and want them all to be up to date but thats just me. As long as it looks good and real then i dont mind at all Smiley

Thoroughly enjoy the WW1 add-ons!

I bought a 'Just Flight' produced CFS2 add-on called "Combat Aces" that is great fun with a few missions, airfields and winter/summer seasons. It's probably out of production now.

I am really looking forward to seeing what you put together.

Good luck.

Hello!

Too bad I didn't see this before.

I can't model skin or code; but I can write campaigns.

Gimme the planes and scenery; I'll give ya a pretty half-decent campaign to fly them in. Either as part of the package or separate; cool either way. Wink

I've put one on SimV (the rest are a little on the weird side; using the more..interestingplanes I've collected over time. I.e. 'F-18's over Guadalcanal' etc. Grin) - if you want to check out my style of campaigning; check out "Take Back the Pacific". Smiley

One word of warning from a mission point of view:
Detailed aircraft are great; but too many in the air can turn air combat into a seriously laggy mess. It's best if a new craft's poly count is similar to that of the stock planes. Smiley

Cheers!

Hi again. Smiley

Sorry; don't mean to annoy anyone with my thoughts; it's just that I've tried making missions with good numbers of aircraft in the past (12-16 a side at times).
Very fun, exciting missions and they work with stock (or simpler) aircraft. Many addon craft are utterly lovely and brilliant to fly; but adding any more than 2 or 3 of them into a mission can cause serious lag problems, IME.
(I tried doing and Eastern Front campaign a couple of years back. I found a totally lovely Se-5 and Geman Albatros on SimV. Flying alone; fps of 24. Turn my head to look at my wingmates - whoa! 6 fps! Grin )

Stratobat's suggestion is ideal, I think; if the devs want to go to the extra work.

BTW: Totally forgot to say; that's an absolutely lovely Camel - can't wait to try it out. Smiley

Cheers!

The AI plane is a good idea for just 1 or 2 planes. However if you have 2 folders for each of the 19 planes in this this campaign then that is not only going to up the size of the download but fill up your aircraft folder with more planes. So i dont think its advisable to do it for all the planes, just the bigger ones like the HP 0/400 and the Zepplin bombers.

Staiduk its going to be a while before the planes are done, i'm still building the camel to get it to look right..maybe its just me that thinks it doesn't look right  Tongue. I've still got to do the LOD and damage modeling yet, so a way to go still. However if you want to draw up some type of campaign using the planes (send us a PM with your e-mail and i'll send you the list i made) then go ahead because we cant stop you   Wink

Hi Guys,

I've been thinking about this, and I think the best way to go about the Campaign/ Expansion would be to create a seperate install of CFS2 specifically for the Campaign. That way you could include AI aircraft without over-population the Aircraft folder. For the AI aircraft you could even leave out things like Polygon Smoothing, that should lower the sizes a little. For the AI aircraft, you could even get away with not putting any detail in the open cockpits, save for the pilot. You could even leave some of the parts untextured.

In a campaign, you could have 1 or 2 "premium" a/c,
usually for the player, and have the rest of the a/c as less
detailed-framerate friendly ones. This could work as a
compromise between the 2 approaches so far.

If all could agree on what airbase/scenery set to use,
mission builders (such as myself) could begin making
missions now. Or at least roughing them out. Later, when
the specially built a/c are available, it would be an easy job to replace the old a/c en masse with
a text editor.

There's some nice-looking airbase sets available out there
for ww1 now. Or is the plan to build all new ones?

I think the plan is to built an entirely new set from the ground up, but you'll have to get into contact with Stiz with regards to that, but before you can even design any scenery or airbases you need to do the research and build the campaign on paper. Otherwise you might end up doing a lot of work for nothing!

What we really need (IMO) is a really good Western Front trenchline scenery. There is one available but frankly it looks fairly cartoonish to my eyes - close to the ground it's fairly cool but from altitude it just looks like a thick brown line.

Rabbit - wanna compare notes on mission/campaign ideas? It'd be great to get multiple heads banging together on this one. Smiley

Yeah Staiduk, I'm up for it. Drop me a line.

If we begin with the idea of creating missions from
historically accurate airbase locations, we could get
started quickly. Certainly, we can plan out the campaign
flow in any event.

Just a quick comment on the frame rate issue. After a lot of experimenting we've found that multi-LOD models are the way to go for all aircraft used in missions. Where possible most of the Fox Four aircraft have now been updated to multi-LOD. Providing you have the original source files, poly count can be reduced considerably with a little thought & the extra models are easily added once you understand the principle. Collin has done the same with his ships & nobody could say they're not highly detailed. The improvement in frame rates is dramatic & makes those furball type missions possible even on low-end systems.

Highly complex visual models are very nice to look at but this makes them very graphics intensive. When you're in combat all you're likely to see of the Player aircraft is the DVC if it has one. You won't get close enough to the AI aircraft to notice small details. The ideal is one model for both Player & AI aircraft. This is not always possible & if necessary you can create special low poly unflyable AI drones without a DVC & all the other bells & whistles.

PS. To save time we tried updating a couple of our old CFS1 AI Only drones for our new Red Star campaign. This works very well as being comparatively simple visual models these are far less graphics intensive than FSDS2 or Gmax models. This works fine for jets but might not be ideal for WWI aircraft as the animated prop disks will not display. They obviously don't have breaking parts or a DVC. Here's a shot of the ex CFS1 F-84E drone during testing of the DP. The MiG 15 is Fang's latest multi-LOD Player aircraft with full DVC & breaking parts.

Why not large bombers & Zepps? Collin's ships are bigger than both & making them multi-LOD increased frame rates dramatically.

If I was doing this I would choose a couple from your list to use as Player aircraft & create your own fully flyable versions with multi-LOD models & DVC as you wish. Depending on how much time you have there are existing CFS1 versions of most of the others. These are very small files & could be easily converted for use as AI Only drones for your missions. AI Only drones don't need panel or sound providing the folders are left intact so removing these could make them even smaller. Some might need the AIR files tweaking to perform properly in CFS2 as AI aircraft. The DP files might also need updating. They all have fixed gear so the only missing animation in AI would be the transparent prop disks. I've tried a couple in QC & that doesn't seem a problem. Of course, you should seek permission from the authors to use them but if it's done properly I can't see them objecting. These can always be replaced with your own versions when you have the time to do it.

You or someone else could create basic AI Only versions of aircraft you can't find. This would take less time than fully flyable versions with all the bells & whistles & allows you to get on with other aspects of the campaign. If this is an ongoing project these can always be replaced with flyable versions later. This is the way we do it at Fox Four.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this, but Multi-LOD (Level of Detail) basically, from my understanding, means that you make a few models of the same aircraft in whatever design program you use so that as you zoom in and out, various levels of detail are shown to increase the framerates.

Stratobat

Basically correct. The M$ default aircraft are Multi-LOD (Multiple Level of Detail) - sometimes known as Multi-Resolution -  models. These are actually several different versions of the same aircraft set up to display according to the distance they're viewed from. The number of models varies but is usually a minimum of four. With single resolution models the sim has to read the graphics intensive High Detail model even when they're tiny specks on the screen. On a multi-LOD aircraft the Low Detail model might be a very basic shape made up from a couple of flat double-sided polygons. This is obviously far less graphics intensive & obviously improves frame rates. This feature is ideal for use with AI aircraft & ships.

PS. Here's an example of the multi-LOD Yak 9 I've been working on. First LOD model #1, the High Detail model. which is only visible when you're close enough to see the details.
...

This is LOD model #4, the Low Detail model which displays at long distance.

Allow me to add a little correction.
multi LODing is possible since FSDS1.4 if I recall it right which was available since late 2000, just most modellers didn't see the need to bother with it Cheesy
The first community multi LOD plane was Joe Amodea's and Jorge Alsina's P-40, some of the oldhands may remember, Defense of Australia if that rings a bell Smiley

Whatever, FSDS cheats when it comes to counting triangles, actually it counts just poligons, regardless of how many triangles these persist.
Having said that you can double the results of the FSDS poligon counter and you are close to the true results, mind you, each game render engine deals with triangles, that's what counts and what sucks the fps.
As a side effect many of the older FSDS birds are way beyond budget without the designer really being aware of it.
Other trap is the famous self-cheating (I'm guilty, too, LOL).One tends to leave out this one badly needed LOD level, or makes the other one yet with a way too high polycount, the possibilities are endless.
Why all that talk?
You can have good detail in the main model in CFS2 but make shure to follow the LODing guidelines and your plane will work flawless fps wise, there is really no need to mess with AI planes.
Feasable guidelines would be fairly as follows:

LOD_100 = 7000 - 20000 (whatever you think) triangles
LOD_90 = 3500  triangles
LOD_70 = 1500 - 2000 triangles
LOD_50 = 500 triangles
LOD_25 = 150 - 200 triangles
LOD_5 = 10 - 25 triangles

Thanks but it's very basic. As Mathias mentioned, Joe Amodea & Jorge Alsina pioneered the multi-LOD concept with the help of other developers including Louis Sinclair the FSDS developer & members of the CFS2 development team. Their P-40 was the first 3rd party multi-LOD model I ever saw. (This also had the first DVC with functional gauges so was a real breakthrough.)  Joe sent me his tute on the basic principles to proof read. This is still posted somewhere in the CFS2 section on this site & is how I learned the basic principles.

As a matter of interest I sent Greg Law the tute at the same time & bullied him into trying it on his new He 177 which became the second multi-LOD aircraft to be posted. This also had a full DVC which was explained in another of Joe & Jorge's tutes.

PS. The CFS2 developers led the way with both & many CFS2 aircraft have used these features ever since those tutes were posted. Even now the benefits of multi-LOD models for AI aircraft don't seem to be appreciated by the FS designers.

Shocked Shocked Shocked that does look good. 1 tip though you should texture as you go along because your gonna love going through all those tubes again  Tongue Smiley

thnx, hahaha for the tubes and stuff, ive seen in pictures that they were of a matte finnish, so im gonna start fiddling with the material definitions so i save on textures...i will texture the seat, floor boards and all the big parts.

i already have the textures assigned for most of the fuselage areas...im in the process of cutting the wholes in the cowling. lemme know if you reallly need this plane for the campy Wink

Thanks for the explanation. Smiley
Hagar; that Low-detail model looks about as complex as I'm capable of building. Grin

On the missions front; just letting you all know RH and I are banging a few ideas off one another - we can firm plans a lot better once the devs produce scenery and airplanes. (But no pressure! LOL!!!)

I am interesred in designing the user interface.  Here are some screenshots of some changes I have made, including new buttons. I used a canvas look and different fonts to try to match the era.  I sent an e-mail to stiz but I have not received a return e-mail. My outlook is acting up so that may be why. Let me know what you think.  I had to lower the quality of the screenshots to make them under 100k.

I never got it  Sad

As for the screens i like the buttons but i'm not so keen on the background of the settings page..must be that yellow  Tongue Smiley

I did a quick set set of screens for WW1 as well ( pics -> http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=cfs2;action=display;num=11... ) so maybe a combination of the 2??

Hey Sitz, I like I'm very interested in your World war one project. I hope you can finish it soon. Its way over due for  someone to get interested on this facinating subject.

Its a shame that no one has ever developed a Simulator just on World war one.

Luckly with CFS2 you can you can develope this kind of project.

They are developing one for CFS3 as well. I know that both projects are going to be great. Looking forward for its completion.

Thanks again

I've been thinking about this, and I think the best way to go about the Campaign/ Expansion would be to create a seperate install of CFS2 specifically for the Campaign.

PS: I'm not being mean here but, that was my idea as well! Cheesy Grin

I was going for a different shade of "unpainted" canvas.  I can make it just about any color.  I have made about 90% of the main screens but can easily change the colors. I have played around with just using black & white or sepia photos to match the era and have some screens with color.  I would upload some more pictures but I do not want to go over the limit. I would be glad to combine ideas.  As far as the yellow goes, give me an idea of what you might like better.  Here are some swatches of colors I have already made.
