I did compare the two...
Matrix Orbital displays are 20 character x 4 line displays, and have direct inputs for up to 25 keyboard switches (in a matrix offering all keyboard inputs), outputs for I think 4 LEDs, and they also offer outputs directly able to control 4 system cooling fans at 12V. All this at $82.95.
The closest Phidgets item is the Text LCD with 0/8/8 interface. These displays are $94.50. No fan control, half the display area, fewer inputs and greater cost.
I want one display dedicated to each of the computer systems in my pit. They will use the standard programs available to monitor system temps/fan speeds and to allow me to change fan speeds based on those temps. This all exists in the software already and makes the Matrix units a no-brainer for these applications. That uses 3 units; one on each of the two avionics computers and one on the primary.
For the "in-sim" display I was considering the Phidget display. Then I saw the multi-purpose software already available for all by chosen flight modes in the
http://www.digital-flight.com/ MSFS LCD data output module (On the Projects Page). I haven't seen a similar functionality in any FS2Phidget stuff yet...and with 2 less display lines, it's probable that it won't appear...unless they do make a 4 line display. I can also use the Matrix displays for other applications and games, something important to me as the pit will be used for other games...like MechWarrior4.
Compare costs/capabilities...well we have another no-brainer.
At current exchange rates...it's almost a wash...I save $15 CAD on the displays, but will eat that on Customs and taxes.
