Which 5 popular bands or individual musicians do you think had the greatest influence on society in the 20th century? Or just which are your 5 favourites? Here are my picks:

1) The Beatles...No other group influenced individual lifestyles and behaviour more than the fab four. Timeless music as well.
2) Elvis Presley...brought black r+b, transformed it into rock and roll and popularized it with the white mainstream. Uninhibited stage presence created a license to get doooown.
3) Robert Johnson...soldified blues as a legitimite genre and brought it to the people.
4) Janis Joplin...unique and untempered vocals, unapologetic lifestyle showed that the girls could rock as hard as the boys.
5) Bob Dylan...elevated to prophet-like status, much to his chagrin. Poet of his generation...if only he were moderately proficient on any one instrument, what a musician he could have been!

You get a bonus "Bite of the Haggis" if you tell me which song and band the title of this thread is derived from. Wink

You covered the top 5 well.  Title of this thread derived from '20th Century Schizoid Man' from King Crimson's first album, 'In the Court of the Crimson King'.

I was just listening to 21st Century Schizoid Man, what a classic tune. Anyway here goes.

1. Elvis - Started rock n roll and basically kick started popular music (the dominant musical style of this century.)

2. The Beatles - Their later stuff popularised experimental music, invented the concept album and set the way for prog rock (my favourite style of music) and more popular music such as 70's pop and disco bands.

3. Led Zeppelin - What can I say? They invented rock as we know it. LZ took influence from smaller bands like Cream, Free and the Yardbirds and exploded into the world making distorted guitars popular for years to come.

4. The Ramones - These guys did become a HUGE influence of popular music and pioneered punk, their influence can even be heard today in new indie bands like Razorlite, not really my style of music but I can't deny how much influence they had.

5. DJ Kool Herc - As much as I would love to put someone like Pink Floyd or Rush in here I have to put DJ Kool Herc in here as this bloke started hip-hop, an undeniably huge musical genre today. He pioneered the use of turntables and used rapping before anyone else and changed music for the next 30 years of the century.

These to me are the most infuential groups of the last century. They are not all my favourite bands but you really can't deny the influence they had. I would say that bands like the Sex Pistols were just riding the wave created by other bands. My problem with Bob Dylan is that I can't find any meaning in his lyrics (wtf is Deselation Row about ??? ) and he really couldn't play or sing lol.

That's the beauty and influence of Dylan though. So many found their own meanings to his music, he created a kind of poetry loving sub-culture that were looking for a pseudo prophet like him to fill in the words to their lives experiences. He was amazed at some of the interpretations people had for his lyrics. His autobiography is amazing, you should try to pick it up!

C'mon guys, dust it off and post your answers, I'd love to hear about everyone's choices. Smiley
