Varies from company to company, and prices also depend on aircraft type.

It's also usually cheaper if you pay for it all at once, rather than pay per lesson. There are companies that will finance your flight lessons too. I'm not sure if this will help you (depending on your location) but
www.pilotfinance.com
is a great resource.

Generally a ppl in the UK will cost between £4500 - 5000. If you look around and are prepared to do it at a club rather than a school you may get it cheaper.
The best way to find out is buy the annual "Pilot" where to fly guide, which I think appears around this time every year. In fact, it just has in the April 2005 issue, which has just left the shelves. Look at
Pilot - April 2005
for the back issue...
You may also want to consider doing a NPPL, which would only require a minimum of 32 hours flying...

Flying is probably
the most expensive
hobby in the world. Any pilot's license will be quite expensive no matter where you go.

Hi Woodlouse you are probably right about Ocean Yacht Racing although some of the pilots and crews that compete at the Reno Air Races yearly are probably right up there as far as expenses go with the yachting folks.
I think it would be an interesting comparison if we could find info on it.

When you do decide to take lessons try taking them on your holidays and when the weather is fine.
You will find your progress will be much smoother especially with less poor weather days.
You might also find you will save a little money as you are not having to re-book lessons all the time...that is when an instructor will usually spend time going over the previous lesson with you as there has been a time lapse.
Commit yourself fully to obtaining your licence in the quickest time you can...on holidays one can fly several times a day where you might be down to one hour a week and going to school or trying to work at the same time.
What ever you decide...have fun.
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Its too expensive. A lot of what goes into my hours is what i've saved up all these years. Pretty much all the money i made last summer is gone from this. I wish I won the lottery...

I shall have a hunt round. Find out how much those boats cost and whatnot.

Somehow I feel the yachting will be far ahead. Just remember, that multi million pount boat is only the tip of a very large iceberg.

Yeah but comparing the PPL to yacht speed racing is like saying the airplanes I have on my shelf are a museum.

It's all relative, what if you privately own a 777?

Then you'd have much more than your PPL. You'd have a multi rating, a jet rating, plus more than likely a commercial and ATP rating...all ignoring the fact that if you owned a 777, you probably wouldn't be too bothered by the $5,000 to get your PPL.

If you buy a 777 price tag of $180 million + you dont do it without knowing the hundreds of thousands its gonna cost to run, if you cant afford those you aint buying the plane. So again with the $5000 is a drop in the bucket for a private owner

If one had a 777, than presumably one would have the cash to employ a aerial chauffuer and co-chauffeur to help one conduct one's business in the air...

Maybe. But I was just saying that the trans ocean yacht racing hobby is more expensive than flying as a hobby.

Well if you want to be able to do that, I would also say that collecting Faberge Eggs is more expensive than collecting Lego kits. They just aren't the same thing.

A hobby is a hobby as a collection is a collection no matter how much cost goes into it.
