I think we've determined there is no real "greatest guitarist" out there. But if you could elect one guitarist to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as being the greatest, who would you pick?

What about "None of the above".
Although Malmsteen is the fastest and most technical player of the choices given, but I wouldn't consider him a hall of famer.

Should add "None of the above", it seems to be the most popular answer.

Someone around here considers Bruce Dickinson a guitarist because he played guitar on like 1 song.

So I guess this poll shows that it is impossible to determine the greatest, as was stated earlier on, there is no greatest, only great ones. So this thread is essentially a grandiose waste of everything. Rock on all!

Well, since I am obviously the only person around who is familiar with the "other" popular music genre, in America at least (not jazz, blues or soul either) I shoould mention a few greats no one has considered. Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Randy Travis, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley. I could go on and on with great pickers that chose to follow the Nashville way. In fact, the test of a truley good guitarist is whether you hear string scrape during a rift or not. I never heard any from the ones I just mentioned, and yes, I have heard Roy Clark play things that the rockers made famous, no string scrape either.

BB King at 3? I love the guy, he's a true bluesman, but I never considered him to be techically impressive. Granted he had a great feel for his guitar, but not too many memorable riffs...Leo Kottke should be on that list, so should Strunz and Farah. Anybody know what #57 Roy Buchanan's greatest hit was? And Joni Mitchell?,seriously. Nice to see someone we all forgot about on the list Buddy Guy.

There are so many. A while ago they published a Top 100 list here in local magazine. I was very similar to the Rolling Stone list, but if I remember, they also had Les Paul in the top ten as wel as several others.
Ones that come to my mind are: Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Brain May, Slash, Tom Morello, Adam Jones, Kirk Hammet, Mark Knopfler,...and did anyone forget my neighbour George Kooymans of Golden Earring??? You don't want me to tell him you forgot him when I see him at the local grocery store again do you?

that list is pretty bad, i would not consider the guy from the white stripes in the top 20 for example. also Johnny at 16? i love the ramones, but even johnny did not consider himself and extremly talented guitarist. and kurt cobain at 12th? i like nirvana, but Billy Zoom is easily a better guitarist than cobain. what does this "top" measure? greatest? most popular? most payed/played?

True but more than often his stuff is just all pyrotechnics and no soul.
Having said that their new album keeps the instrumental wanking to a minimum and shows some very good song writing 8)

Why would I? So we could have the same kinda arguments again? This threaad isn't even from that long ago and threads travel at a slow speed here. I just brought in a new player so there wasn't any need to start a new thread imo.

I voted for Stevie Ray since he was on the poll, but if he were there I would have to go with Ry Cooder. That boy can play blues that gives you goosebumps. Rolling Stone has him at #8, but I think it's unfair to rate the outstanding guitarists. Music has so many facets and styles. It's like, how the hell do you say anyone is better at the music played by Page, Hendrix or any of the others in their respective hits?

Yup certainly!!
I think BB was right and that it's impossible ( or almost) to decide on one greatest guitarist. So... If you have another one to add to the list ... Add it so we all get to know more great guitarists!

I was going to add Brian May. Not many of them have a degree in Astrophysics (or something similar) either.
To be fair though, it's hard to single out a single member of Queen for individual praise. They were all exceedingly talented musicians, and all of them wrote hit songs (John Deacon was the best songwriter in the group IMO). Awesome band...

There's no such thing as a greatest guitar player of all time. There are "greatest in a given generation of players", but it's impossible to quantify a "greatest of all time". Why? Because each generation of players build upon technique from a previous generation. For example, Jimi Hendrix was arguably the greatest of his generation. But today, there's a number of pro and amateur players what are better than Hendrix. Obviously, today's players have all benefited from what Hendrix pioneered, so it's an unfair comparison to find a "greatest of all time".

Again I'll say Definately not Clapton...and Definately not Malmsteen. But yes to Steve Howe from "Yes", David Gilmour From Pink Floyd and Paul Gilbert when he was at "Racer X" and many other obscured names like Andy La Roque from King Diamond and Nocturno Culto From Drak Throne...in Satyricon's Nemessis Divina Album as well. By that time at Satyricon he was called by Kvelduv. No one in earth did what he did about to compose an entire album. He is not a good soloist Thought.
The music of this album Nemessis Divina are still misunderstood for the Human being in general.
