Peculiarities of Mozilla Firefox.

Hello All...!

Having been constantly infected with spyware, adware, Trojan viruses, etc, using Internet Explorer (IE), I recently have tended to use Mozilla Firefox to browse the Internet and also to access the SimV Forum, to reduce many of these annoying intrusions!

This has given me a few problems with the Firefox TEXT EDITOR which I did not experience when using the TEXT EDITOR in IE.

For example:
(1) Smilies can only be inserted DURING typing the text.
When the text is completed, any attempt to insert smilies at various points WITHIN the text only results in the smilie always being automatically inserted at the END of the text!

(2) Attempting to insert pictures within the text always fails, both for the Forum and Instant Messages.
Pressing the "Add Picture" icon and inserting the URL address in the usual place, as you do, only results in the complete command appearing within the text as follows:

[example]http//www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/fozzersfamouspic.jpg[/example]

...but NOT the picture!
It seems that the YA Bulletin Board HTML editor is not fully compatible with the Firefox HTML editor..!

Could I be missing some plug-in, add-on's to Firefox to make it compatible with Internet Explorer and it's text editor?

Any ideas...?

Many thanks...

Cheers all...!

Paul. The Phantom Moaner, and Peculiar Sort Of Person...LOL...!

P.S. Another rather annoying thing about the Firefox text editor: The command cursor is always placed directly over the letter, rather than in front of the letter, as is usual, which makes it confusing for a typist to estimate the result when using the "delete" and "space" key presses..!
Also, before I forget, I have a very useful spell checker, (iespell.com), downloaded, installed, and incorporated in the tool-bar of my IE, handy for spell checking the text editor before posting on the Forum....anyone know of a link to a similar add-on installation for Firefox...?
     Fantastic...!

The smiley thing is annoying  but if you learn the code then you can just type it in as normal  Grin

That's the very reason I stuck with IE when visiting this forum. I use Firefox for most other browsing. They run quite happily together & I often have several browser windows open at the same time anyway so it doesn't bother me.

Hagar is right, now and then with a few sites, I have to switch over to IE for everything to work correctly.

BUT, this is very easy to do with the "Launchy" Plug-In for Firefox. Get a page that you have problems with, click on Launchy and select "Open in IE". Do what you need or want to do in IE and then you can close it.

Yes there is that plug-in and there was another that allows you to open IE pages in Firefox that I don't remember, but if Fireman says Launchy, I would go for that he has yet to steer me wrong Wink

BTW thanks for that FireTune link that little thing works wonders!!

Hmmm, I am at the firehall doing my morning reports. If I was home I would checking as I am almost positive I have no problems with smileys and Firefox.

Will check this when I get home. Might be in your firefox settings Fozzer.

The ONLY problem I have experienced is the cut and paste of of anything in these forums. I then have to use Launchy and open the page up in IE and do my cutting and pasting. Firefox says I have to enable this in my settings but I CAN'T FIND THEM!! lol  Sad

Have also found a few, mind you VERY few sites that I have to switch to IE. One for example is Mapquest. The page displays properly but the map itself will not display until I open the page in IE. No problem though.

Will check the Smiley mystery when I get home.

I think I've got the problem with "inserting a picture" sorted out.....It's just a case of waiting for the picture to appear... 8)...!
Firefox is a bit slow in that respect...(A bit like me)... Wink...LOL...!

I still can't figure out why Firefox doesn't accept the command to "inset smiley" in the desired place in the text from the list of smilies displayed at the top of the page after the text has been completed.
Internet Explorer manages it OK... Roll Eyes...!

Cheers...!

Paul.

Maybe it can be done by inserting the the special "smiley code digits" in the desired place by hand after the text is completed, but that's much too fiddly for me...LOL...!

Hi _526...!

Select reply, type a small page of text.
When completed, with the mouse go back to various places within the text, and after selecting the desired smiley (or text style) from the top of the page, try positioning it at that place in the text.
Whenever I try that it ALWAYS positions the smiley (or text style) at the END of the text... Cry...!

Fireman posted the tip in another spot, and when the Fireman has a tip to a utility I usually give it a try, once again he pulls through with another great find Wink

About the smilies I have noticed in any forum I go to if you don't enter the smiliy first before continuing then it will always be placed at the end, but there is where you find the "code" mentioned above Wink, you can see what combinations of letters, punctuation mars ar whatever it is that makes up that smiliy Smiley

Hi Fret...!

Re: The Smilies.

Inserting them anywhere in the text after it is completed works fine when using Internet Explorer as a browser/text editor, it's using Firefox as a text editor that creates the problem... Roll Eyes...!
There is something strange/different about the HTML code in Firefox.
It doesn't seem to be fully compatible with the YaBB HTML code used for the Simviation Forum.
So it's probably a good idea to use Firefox as a general browser, and IE as a very good text editor for the Forums... Wink... Grin...!
...I think this is what Hagar does... Wink...!

Cheers....!

Yeah, the smiley thing is annoying. I've been using Firefox so long, I thought that was a peculiarity of YABB!! Grin Grin Grin Grin (inserted before continuing!). Even worse is trying to create italicised sections...Angry
I need to try "Launchy" etc.... my biggest peeve w/firefox right now is that I can't reply to a message in Outlook (all my work email is on an Outlook Exchange server).  Wonder if Launchy will help with that... ???

WOWZERS...!
Ta, Rotty....!
That proves that it's not me that's going mad... Grin...LOL...!
It's only recently that I've been using Mozilla Firefox as a Browser/Text editor.
Previous to that I always used Internet Explorer, (IE), as my Browser/Text editor, and the editor always worked fine with the SimV (YaBB) Forum... 8)... Grin...!
IE allows complete control over editing the page, smilies/text styles/insertions, etc... Grin...!
So....
I have both Firefox and IE browser Icons on my desktop, and it looks as tho' if I want to use a good text editor for the Forums, I select Internet Explorer, and use Mozilla Firefox for general browsing the Internet.... 8)...!
Firefox is excellent for avoiding all those annoying pop-ups, adware, etc... 8)...!

Cheers all...!

No rotty, Firefox will download Launchy.

I am telling you boys, Launchy is what you want. With Firefox browser open and you run into any problem with a site...say HERE for example  Wink, you just hit your Launchy Icon, select "Open in IE" and VIOLA....you have a second browser open and it's.........you guessed it.............Internet Explorer. Do what you need to do in IE and when done close the IE browser and the Firefox browser is still there and refreshes itself.

I love the the little program as before I did what you did Fozzer, hit the IE icon on my desktop but this is a work around compared to the ease  of Launchy.

Dang.........just flipped back to page one and saw your request for a different test Fozzer. Sry, back at the firehall today, but will try it tom. when I get home..............now that I understand what it is you are trying to do.

rottydaddy, if I remember right......you have to add the Launchy shortcut icon to your Firefox toolbar. Look for the "Customize" section in tools or for the toolbar. There you should see the NEW Launchy icon. Just add it to your toolbar.

Been awhile as I have had it for quite awhile now, but I am pretty sure that when I downloaded I thought the same thing.....Where is it!!!?

Ok Fozzer, here's YOUR test you wanted.  Grin. Now that smiley was entered as I was typing.

Next one will be added here..... when I am done with this block of text. If I understand you correctly ( yes I am slow sometimes ) I won't be able to do it........the smiley will just appear here.... Grin

Ok, wasn't able to insert it like you said.

Now this is being typed in the IE page opened up through Launchy...........Firefox browser is still up.
Now am going to insert smiley here.. Grin   and it should work just fine. Text over...now trying to insert smile above.

Worked fine there. So it is a Firefox issue.

I don't know of a way out of the problem, but I have noticed that the same problem occurs on the LAGO Forum...even using Internet Explorer... Shocked...!

So....

It's Firefox for general Browsing, and IE for problem-free typing on the SimV Forum... Wink... Grin...!

Cheers all...!

Paul.

And proving that, ...well....no need, WE ALL know the answer to that.
