and no is the correct answer i think...
All down to balance. The gun was going to be replaced with shaped ballast of equal mass - but the weight distribution was all wrong as a consequence. Hence they discovered the best imitation of the gun's weight was in fact the gun itself...
DOH!!!

The other advantage of having the gun is that if, as currently rumoured, some of the RAF's allocated 232, are sold or leased to the Singaporean AF (possibly from tranche 2) or another party, it will have an (undeveloped) gun for them to employ if required...
