Since you guys have been working so hard at trying to figure this one out
, I'll reward your eforts by revealing the identity of this thingamabob:
It's the Montijo and Royer California Coupe, a five-seat sport/business craft built at the Kinner plant in 1924. On its first flight it crashed into a car "while stunting for a movie cameraman", and apparently the partners abandoned their plan to build several more... probably for the best.

But you don't get an idea of width from the pic above - so it could be possible - just think along the lines of the Thruxton Jackeroo

Agreed. No idea of the dimensions but from the people standing nearby it looks like a big aircraft.
