Okay gents, Against my better judgement, I've actually reinstalled CFS3 (initial and update - clean, no add-ons yet) and IL2(FB).

Training flights have started (am presuming that just because I can take off and fly around in FS2004 and Aces High, doesn't mean it's that easy in CFS3/IL2(FB)

IL2(FB) plane set is interesting, if sadly incomplete c'mon, no Gladiators for the Finnish scenarios -grumble -( the purists will argue they weren't used operationally in the Continuation War - nit picking details!)

I note that IL2(FB) has a lot of "user defined"  controls/ commands - not that I'm going to start messing around until I can naviagate/ fly decently.

I don't see the main problem (for me) to be the actual taking off and in-air flying around, but rather the navigation to the different action locations.  The Navigation map will take some getting used to.

Looks promising!

Felix:

My first tip for FB newbies:  You can open any mission in Full Mission Builder, open the properties of the player's flight, and change it to any flyable type you want.  Trust me, it's easy.

2nd tip: (this is the most important one!):
Get the Über Quick Mission Builder!!  <YOU MUST GET THIS

It's FREE

http://www.uberdemon.com/index2.html

P.S. Do you use mouse look or TIR?

The Finnish Gladiator is in the upgrade patch. (Plus lots of other European aircraft like the P-80 shooting Star, P-51, Spitfire etc). It's purchased as the ACE EXPANSION pack, but I think it may also be downloadable. Then you'll have to patch that.
IL-2 is Patch City, man.

The Uber Quick Mission Builder is unnecessary.
As I've said before, and I'll say again: The IL-2 Mission builder is extremely comprehensive and massively easy to use.
There is a tutorial available somewhere, and it shows how easy it is. I can't remember where I first saw it, but the IL-2 message boards probably have the link.

And cfs3 is third party add-ons heaven!  Grin
Seriously, if you attempt a comparison between FB and cfs3, then you have to patch FB and to add some must-haves to cfs3, otherwise the comparison wouldn't be fair.

Head over to the Sim-outhouse and search for essential add-ons threads : there are several of them in the cfs3 forum.

The trouble with the IL-2 patches is that they are massive: 80mb is normal.
With CFS3, I got  a small patch to save wear and tear on my CD; and a small upgrade that fixed the level-bombing glitch. I downloaded a B-17 because I wanted it, not because I needed it.

I prefer CFS3 to IL2FB but whilst the patches for IL2 are huge it does at least come with a mission builder, having said that there is plenty of room in other threads to debate the pro's and cons of the two sim's.  This thread is about Felix's learning curve.

Something to add to your IL2 pilots notes.

IL2 FB etc. has an issue where all planes have torque modeled even the jets & P-38 (who's engine rotation neutralized it) so the same care must be taken on takeoff that you use for a Spitfire or 109.

When you attempt to run PF your monitor will go black because Ubisoft pulled the plug.  Luckily for me I read about this problem here in this forum and uninstalled PF before any thing bad happened.

One thing I would like added to CFS3/ and just about any multiplayer-capable flight simulator (including FS/ ACes High, Warbirds, IL2/PF ... ) is an instructor mode whereby control can be transferred between instructor and student.

I would appreciate an online session with a knowledgable person who would "talk" me through a flight....

Aces high does have a "join" mode, where you can ride as an "observer" on any plane, but it doesn't allow for transfer of control ...

Now a 1% Tiger Moth with instructor and student capabilities...

With crewed planes in CFS3, can this be flown by two
pilots front/back interchanging the controls?

Example - you and I choose the same PT-19.  I'm in the front, you're in the back.  given that the plane can be flown from both seats, can you "show" me a maneouver, then "I" repeat it?

I don't think so, you can have one real pilot and as many real gunners as the plane has gunner stations.

Surely the ability to switch to gunner positions means that if you have enough seats the pilot and observer can jump around alternating between sitting at the controls and one of the gunner positions? It's not quite what Felix was after but I think it would serve... Tongue

I am not sure how smart the Multi-player code is & have never tried it on-line.

Here is what it looks like off line.

You may have hit something there ...  a "virtual three-seat" PT-19 or other "two seater"  instructor flies plane, while student is in " gunner1" then instructor jumps to "gunner2"  (AI pilot takes control) then student jumps to pilot position ...   "gunner1" and "gunner2" positions are duplicate "pilot" cockpits with working instrumentation ...  Basically, you'd always have an "empty" seat.

For visual model purposes, the "gunner1" and "gunner2" locations are co-located  (if that's the case, then the "gunner2" model can be just a tiny box, really "looking" and "gunner1" instrumentation.

Too bad I can't model for CFS3 worth a durn because otherwise I'd try it myself.

As I have the modelling skills of Ubisofts terrain modellists I too couldn't attempt it. But, how hard can it be to add another virtual gunner seat to a model thats already made? Smiley The ball is now in AVhistory's court. Hint hint. Grin

LOL - About the only thing *I* could attempt would be the sample P47 - convert it into a twoseater (there were a few 2 seat jugs made).  Basically copy the instrumentation, etc., to the "rear" and re-compile.

It wouldn't be a true "two seater" but you're not trying to emulate the performance of a 2-seater anyway.  The "virtual gunner" would not affect the performance anyway.
