The no-cd patch is illegal and M$ can close down sites hosting it, so you need to find some kind soul online who has it and is prepared to send it to you.

If you take a look on the CFS1 homepage here on SimV there is a link to AlphaSim (I think) and they offer a way to edit the *.exe to allow no-cd operation. To my knowledge its not illegal, and it works absolutely fine for me.

This can be done with a hex editor. As Dan refered, check the CFS utilities section.
Pertaining to legality, you'll be making an alteration of a program that you've already installed, with the use of the CD, on your PC; if you're intention is to distribute copies of your altered program then, even aside from M$, it's rather unfair to those who procure an original program CD (whether original release or present lower-cost CD, produced under license to Atari).
