They have the same problem at the Nats, the UK national R/C championships. I know a few of the chaps that go regularly & they call it the "halo factor". Once someone has a reputation the judges overlook little obvious faults that would disqualify anyone else. This means they always end up winning & the others never stand a chance. I imagine it's much the same in any competition where judging depends on someone's personal opinion.

And most of the flying in the "scale" competitions is vaguely comical - They could at least try to make their creations fly like the real thing (in a scale fashion). My favourite was a scale hurricane 2 or 3 years ago that did a 20ft diameter loop, which to scale (about 1/6) would be 120ft in real life! The airshow line is far better...

More & more people at this type of show are packing ear defenders nowadays. Good idea especially for the little ones.

i would have thought with all the time you have spent round aircraft Doug you would have known that. Or were you young and ignorant and refused to wear them round running aircraft? Smiley I did many times when on the base round Wallop, but have been lucky in that it hasnt effected my hearing too much.

When I was younger there was no such thing as Health & Safety regulations. I dread to think of the damage I did to my vital organs without even realising it. Fortunately, except for a permanent ringing in my ears, which might or might  not be related, nothing has shown up yet. My father-in-law was not so lucky. He was in the artillery during WWII & was nearly stone deaf as a result. Plenty more like him. They had no ear-defenders in those days.

I know what ya mean. My dad is almost completely deaf in his left ear because he refused to wear them at work. Makes things interest on car journeys:)

Since you mentioned it I think I discovered why that Tornado shot was rejected. I saw one almost identical to it on sale on a stall at our local Aero Jumble. When I enquired about it the stall owner told me it was taken by his friend who had also uploaded to Anet. I suspect he got there first. I forget his friend's name but these two are professionals & I'm convinced they're genuine. From what they had on display the quality of their work is exceptional.
