Sorry if this isn't were I should be posting, first off Wink

I would just like to have a rant about airshows Undecided, I have gone to the RAF Leuchars Airshow since, oooo, 1998  Grin(only year I have missed was 1999 becasue of Kosovo Cry)

Every year I have noticed that the funfare, is slowly taking over the day Sad, now here is me thinking that an "airshow" might have something to do with planes in the sky, you know, in the air Roll Eyes. I have noticed that the airshow is becoming a ground show, with the events on the ground being better than in the air, for some, not me Cry

Now, I was wondering if someone could explain this, as it seems no sense to me Shocked

So this year, me and my Dad are off to fairbrough to do it properly Grin

I can't speak for Leuchars but all the air shows I attended last year (& I went to at least one event every weekend of the season) were great value for money. Some of the displays lasted for over 5 hours which isn't bad value by any standards. They put on the ground displays & funfairs to attract families as these things cost an awful lot of money to put on. This shouldn't detract from the air show itself & I find it adds to the atmosphere.

Farnborough won't be until next year (2006) as it's now a biennial event & alternates with the Paris show. I don't know what you're expecting but it's a mere shadow of its former self & I no longer bother with it. The air display gets shorter every time I go. This is a trade show & more ground display orientated than the ordinary air displays you're complaining about. Here's a list of the major events for 2005. http://aeroflt.users.netlink.co.uk/shows/showdate.htm

Unless you mean Fairford. Where i am trying to go this year. Farnborough really isnt worth a long journey. I went a number of years back when the Typhoon made its airshow debut. And after that it just went downhill. As Doug points out, its a trade show, and if your wanting to go for displays, dont expect anything spectacular at Farnborough. They dont even do they full display you would get at most shows, as they are only trying to show of the aircrafts key abilities.

Well everything I have seen is European. Most airshows in the US still feature solid flying. The latest one I have been to was at the Joint Reserve Base in Ft. Worth, Texas. It was really great. The JRB is huge and they had every kind of plane I could imagine. AA had a 777 there, FedEx flew in a cargo 727. Tons of military planes. The best thing I saw, other than the Harrier flight which was downright awesome and the FINA pilot setting a world record, was watching a P-51, P-47, and C-130 fly in formation. It was really touching to watch 50 years of aviation fly around together (though it did sound a little odd...).
Though I compare it to an airshow I went to on 9-8-2001. The flying was a little more freestyle then, now after 9-11, it's tighter and some things aren't done. But still a wonderful display in the US!

Pilot for a major US airline certified in the: EMB-120, CRJ, 727, 737, 757, 767, and A-320 and military, T-38, C-130, C-141, and C-5 along with misc. other small airplanes. Any questions, I'm here for you.

Two things an Airshow needs, good flying displays, and good static displays with accessible pilots to answer questions. You want to go on rides goto a funfair/ carnival.

Well according to his profile Budd lives in Scotland.

It really depends what you're interested in. If you like warbirds & you're willing to travel I suggest the Flying Legends event at Duxford. For older rare vintage types you can't do better than any event at Old Warden which isn't that far from Duxford. The Waddington show is a tad closer to you & advertised as the RAF's biggest air show. http://www.waddingtonairshow.co.uk/

PS. Quote:
Sponsored by the Air Force Board of the Defence Council, the Waddington International Air Show is the largest of the RAF's official air shows. The venue has acquired a hard-earned reputation amongst visiting pilots and aircrew for its excellent hospitality, and is consequently always very well supported by aircraft from around the western world - many not normally seen in the UK.

The 7-hour flying display has a truly international flavour and is expected to include at least 1 top national display team in addition to the RAF's Red Arrows. The static aircraft display will feature up to 100 military and civilian aircraft in 3 separate parks.

PPS. Seems the first 2 weeks in July is fully booked for me. Wink

1-3 July 2005 PFA International Air Rally 2005 Kemble, Glos.
2-3 July 2005 RAF Waddington 2005  RAF Waddington, Lincs.
3 July 2005 Shuttleworth Summer Air Display  Old Warden, Beds.
9-10 July 2005  The Flying Legends Air Show  IWM Duxford, Cambs.
10 July 2005 British Aircraft Fly-In Popham, Hants.

Oh and no complaining about airshows eh? We get 1 every other year in Hungary (thanks to the tight-assed government, who have just given themselves a massive pay-rise, and lots of lovely freebies like top-of-the-range laptops etc and upped the taxes, and still won't go back to an annual airshow Angry)
Right now I want to marmalade MSzP!!!! Angry Angry Angry Anyone got a spare Lanc or B-17 I could borrow?

The first big event of the season is the Spring Air Display at Old Warden on May 1st.  All being well both Charlie & I will be there so if you can possibly make it we can all meet up. I guarantee that anyone with the silghtest interest in aviation will enjoy it.

My daughter lives near Coventry so I have it all worked out. I can make a round trip of it & also spend time with my new grandchild who should have been born by then. I've warned them I'm already making plans for its first air show. Poor kid doesn't stand a chance. What fun. Cheesy

What Doug says is very true, and I will be there too, armed with camera and picnic.

Don't know yet about the rest of the year - I'll try and get to Duxford and OW as much as I can, but maybe give the biggies at Waddo/Fairford a miss to rest my eardrums... Smiley

Due to my exams, I miss some good shows around here such as Zeltweg Airpower in Austria, Red Bull Airrace in Rotterdam and the Paris Airshow featuring the A380 (in flight) and probably the Su-30... Sad

Those on my list for now are some local (small) shows around here and off course the RIAT at Fairford. There are plans to go to the Czech Intl. Airfest in Brno and the Edwards Open House (if they don't cancel it this time) or Aviation Nation at Nellis...but I first have to get the budget together.  Wink

oh yeah, those Harriers are loud mothers. I'm so happy, i finally got to see one hover last summer for my first time.  I was jumping up and down like a little school girl!! lol  I was with my mom and was like, "Look ma, it's HOVERING!" lol

But, certainly not the loudest thing I've heard without ear protection.  Is it a bad thing that jets in full afterburner no longer hurt my ears?

Even though it's pretty much at Idle... this passing 60 feet overhead 6 times is pretty loud too.  (and warm!)

As for my list....  SeaFair in Seattle (where i took the pic above0  Abbotsford BC, McChord AFB open house, and Hillsboro OR.  I'm excited to see the Thunderbirds at three of the four.  Smiley  And the Snowbirds at Abby, those guys ROCK!

My point about the Harrier is that hovers & moves slowly at full throttle. This leads to a constant blast of sound which is definitely not good for the ears, especially with small children. Fortunately parents are becoming more sensible & most protect their children's ears at displays nowadays.

That's a nice shot. I'm not sure about your ears. Maybe you're just getting used to it.

The loudest noise I've ever heard was at a Farnborough Air Show many years ago or before the air show to be correct. While walking fom the bus to the display area we passed an EE Lightning chained down to a concrete test pad. They started the engines & ran them flat out on full AB. That was bad enough until they lit the Spectre rocket motor mounted between the jet exhausts. This ran for several minutes & the noise was incredible. I was surprised the whole thing didn't take off, concrete pad & all.  It was bliss when they finally shut it down. I don't think my ears ever recovered from that.

Last year, we stood next to a taxiway while a F-16 came by. He was just taxiing lets say 4 meters away from me. You'd say: "he was only taxiing, that can't make any noise"...but au contraire mon frère, this made a hell of a noise. You can't compare it to the sound of an afterburner, but it was very sharp that it went straight through your body. I only made one quick photo and covered my ears because it was too painfull.

Those Harriers can get loud of they are near you and decide to fly out of a hover. But at idle on the ground, they are very quiet for military aircraft.

4 harriers all hovering in front of you. Now that is loud, i am sure Doug remembers the display from Yeovil last year that too was pretty impressive. Gotta admit the Vulcan had a ring to it that couldn't be beaten

Hey Budd, when I was an AF instructor, I would occasionally light up the plane near cars on purpose, quite amusing to watch the alarms go off (and back then, it was VERY easy to set off the alarms).

There are louder aircraft but the Harrier is one of the worst (or best) for concentrated sound for a prolonged period. The RAF Harrier hovers & moves slowly backwards & forwards in front of the crowd for several minutes at the end of his display. This is done at full power throughout & could very easily damage a young child's ears permanently. Some friends of mine with a young baby left last year's Shoreham show before the Harrier display for this reason.

The Vulcan was very impressive. His party trick was to do a low pass over the airfield, then lift the nose into a steep climb on full afterburner with the jet exhausts aimed directly at the crowd. This made the ground shake & the sound went right through you. We used to call it being Vulcanned. Wink I've seen all sorts over the years, even 3 Vulcans in formation at Farnborough, but this was probably the most memorable.

Another thing that's hecka loud is Carrier ops.  Try standing 80 feet from an F/A-18 at full afterburner on a cat, ready to go.  After seeing the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds, Super Hornet, Tomcat, F-15, B-1 takeoffs... nothing beat the noise on that carrier.  And feeling that thump in the deck as the shuttle hits the waterbreak, and that jet going by, as the next one revs up on cat 4 ready to launch.  Prowlers are prtty loud to for not having afterburners.  Hoovers just whine.  lol  But they sound cool as the engines spin up to full power.

If there's something that doesn't have afterburners but makes a hell of a noise, it must be a good old B-52 during take off! Saw it last year and oh my god that was loud.  Wink

Yup those B-52s can be looouuuuuddd! Hagar, they do that same flight routine with the Harriers in the US I have seen. The demo team ALWAYS ends up hovering, then flying backwards and forwards slowly (weird seeing a plane back up), and spinning in circles. Walk away at the end of that one and you won't hear the guy announce the next event!

Pilot for a major US airline certified in the: EMB-120, CRJ, 727, 737, 757, 767, and A-320 and military, T-38, C-130, C-141, and C-5 along with misc. other small airplanes. Any questions, I'm here for you.
