How is the variation where you are flying?
In Sweden, we have it fairly easy, just some 2-3 degrees. Though there is an area slightly north of Poland where the compass will go haywire and show a good 30degrees error. Grin

I understand it's a bit trickier in the US  ???

In Brisbane we have 10 to 11 degrees of variation.  Makes it nice and easy Wink

here in texas it can range from about 3 degrees to over 7 degrees depending on the part of the state you are in. I hear up in washington state is it something above 11 or 12 degrees.

In my home state of NJ, it averages about 13 deg. W. There is also an area near Philadelphia, PA where a "magnetic disturbance of up to 5 degrees at sea level" is noted on aero. charts... lots of iron around there, I guess, as PA has been known for its steel production.
In general, the isogonic lines are a little wiggly here in the US, plus of  course it's about 3000 miles coast-to-coast, so there are a lot of zones...
