Dear Pilots real and Sim.

I love the Golden Eagle P51 but am having trouble taking off.

I can do it but every time it is a different rotation speed and flabs and trim adjustments.

On other P51s  the plane just takes off at about 140 knots.

When do I rotate? Do I have to preset flabs to 10 degrees, and trim the nosie up?
Thanks for you helps JFG IFR and VFR sim pilot.

A P-51, as in a World War II fighter P-51? No way that thing should take until 140 knots to rotate, you can get small airliners off by then.

Thanks Saratoga,

I know what you say is true. But I was just wondering how this White Eagle compares to the real P51 in take offs and landings.

With other P51's Like Glady's the rotation speed is about 85 knots or less, depending on the on board weight.
I have seen a copy of the manual on P51 and all it says is hold the stick back, lock the rear wheels straight and apply gradual power, go to proper manifold pressure and then it will lift off.
Manual from Shock Wave.com

Any P51 pilots out there have any advice?

The manual is correct. Buddy of mine flys them in airshows. The takeoff procedure is simple. Lock the tailwheel, apply full power (actually slightly less, maximum manifold pressure) with one notch of flaps and hold the stick back. Depends on weight but 60-80 mph is standard.

Thanks again Saratoga,

We Sim pilots don't always have the same knowledge as You real pilots, but being handicapped and never ever flown this Sim., stuff is the closes I'll ever get to real flying.

As to the problem of take offs, it appears as thought the real problems is in the software developers of the White Eagle P51 planes air-dynamics stuff. I did fly the Gladys's P51 just as You say and it works Ok, landings are a snap. I do fly Jets, but love the sounds of the piston planes a little better.

Thanks for your helps, now off I go to the wild blue yonder.

If it's still not working, try holding some nose-down stick and let the tailwheel come off the ground, then a second or two later, pull back and climb away.

jknight8907,

Dear Sir, I tried as You suggested to get the P51, White Eagle of the ground in a reasonable rotation speed. I let the tail wheel come up, applied a little down pressure on the take off and then tried to rotate at around 85 knots. This plane will not lift off until I reach 120 and add lots and lots of up trim. I still think something is wrong with the software.

Thanks anyway no problems with any other P51 guess I'll just forget flying this beast. JFG IFR and VFR Sim pilot for some 5 years now.

one more idea...do you have any flaps down? If not, press F6 once and try to take off. That may work out better.

He said he was using different flap combinations.

One thing though, this is only in this plane right? No other problems.

Sounds like the controls are not near sensitive enough. I don't have this plane but is there maybe any kind of hydraulic system for the controls you need to turn on? If it was off, you would have almost no control, which sounds like this situation.

Saratoga,

This A-ST P51D by Shigeru Tanaka is the only plane that acts up this way. I tried to find a Hydralic pressure guage and  switch to see if that could be the problem as you say, no go.

I can fly it like I noted above, but it seems to unrealistic to think the P51's needed that long of a take off, that would put limits on their use in WWII with many air fields short don't you think?

Any way I think now I will try to find the e-mail of the designeer and see what the problem may be

Thanks again for your helps.

Ya I know for a fact they don't takeoff at 140 knots no matter how heavy they get. I have seen them do short field takeoffs, they can get off quick.
