ok cheers for your help. i'll look at the amd's on overclockers. if i just changed my gpu to, say, a 6800 for now (and upgraded cpu etc in a few weeks) would i get any better performance or would my cpu etc just bottleneck it? cheers, nick
As long as your existing celeron isn't too underpowered, then a 6800 will make a big differance.
Don't kid yourself its all down to your CPU and RAM, its NOT!
Your 3D card is where I'd be spending money.

hi, its a 2.8 ghz celeron r, 80 gb hard drive, 512 mg of ram, currently a 5700 le gpu, and i just added a creative audigy platinum pro. so you think i should upgrade my gpu rather than the cpu/motherboard? that certainly sounds a lot easier to achieve anyway! cheers

ive found two gpu's in my price budget (just!)
PowerColor ATI Radeon X800 Pro 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-029-PC)
or
Galaxy Glacier GeForce 6800 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-000-GL)
the galaxy has a core clock speed of 350 mhz, but ive seen a 6600 card with a speed of 500 mhz. i assume the 6800 is the better card, but how come its got a slower clock speed? thankin u!

The PowerColor X800 Pro is by far the better card of the two you have shown; but I fully recommend that you do not buy it.
There would be no point, the card itself is more powerful than your current CPU, so the set-up and performance wouldn't be very good.
JUST GET A NEW PC!
Trust me, just build up the funds and buy one of the complete systems at
www.overclockers.co.uk
. I have recommended the good ones in a previous thread.
Think about it... the card itself costs around £200, and you'd be putting it in a very poor system (budget 2.8 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM PC2800)
A decent PC at overclockers costs only £850... and they have a 64 bit AMD Athlon 3500+, 1GB RAM and a GeForce 6800 GT.
Just common sense really...
...!
Hope this has helped,
Rob.

Add 512MB RAM plus a 6600GT or even a 6800LE / GT you will see big improvements, and you'll reap further benefits once you swap that CPU for a "full house" Pentium 4.
Obviously, best of both worlds is a new system, but, hey , were not made of money! The correct area for you to spend money on your system ,elwellnick24 remains your Graphics card.

ok, what about this one-
Gainward Ultra 1960 Goes Like Hell (6626) GeForce 6600 GT 128MB DDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-022-GW)
it costs a bit more than the others on here
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_6600_GT.html
but if im gonna get one i want a good one! but is it worth spending more, i mean, how much difference is there between a cheap 6600 and an expensive one? cheers, nick

(im rebuilding an engine for my car at the mo so thats the bottomless pit of the moment.....) ive ordered an xfx 6600gt from overclockers, it seemed like a good price for what i'll be getting. hope ive made the right choice of card, i just couldnt justify spending anymore ath mo.....i'll let you know how much better it is than the 5700 le when its installed! cheers guys

im getting horrible straight lines, bits of screen missing and bits of scenery where they shouldnt be. ive tried the graphics on all settings and no joy, its still there. i downloaded the latest drivers but it made no difference. can anyone help!?? one thing i have discovered is that i read that the card has a graphics core speed of 500 mhz, but when i opened the overclocking bit on the menu its currently at 300 mhz! im a bit stuck on what to do, so as usual! you're expert help would be greatly appreciated! cheers, nick
