I have the same setup.  Before I bought the router I could look at the zone alarm logs and see it blocking hackers trying to get into my PC.

After I installed the router the only traffic I see in the zone alarm logs is between my PC and the router.

Your router has an IP address assigned by your ISP.  This address is visible to the world.  But your PC's IP address is assigned by the router.

So hackers can beat on your router but they can't see your PC behind it.

Behind the router (where your computer is located)
is local adress space (class A, B, C or D)
These adresses are illegal to use on the net...

With the setup i use at home the cable modem has a router... so the router resides in the 'local' area for the cable modem. all pc's are in the 'local' area of the router

A determined hacker could get into your computer, even bypass your router and software firewalls, but they would have to be really determined. Generally, hackers won't penetrate the networks of average users. However, trojans and other loopholes in the windows OS could allow a hacker to control your system. Just keep your system updated using windows update and you'll be fine. I never had a problem when i was at my aunts house who uses a regular router as protection.
