HAMILTON, OHIO – 31 January 2005 --  SpectroGrafx Productions, Inc. (SGPI) today announced that Flight Simulator Design University (FSDU), an online school of design, has completed its first session of online classes.  The school offers classes to people who wish to learn how to design graphics and add-ons for various purposes, such as Flight Simulators and other games.

“After numerous sleepless nights for the staff members involved in the backstage processes of testing software, handling student feedback and creating an environment  students love to learn in, the final result was an incredible experience for everyone. ", said Greg Swagler, President/CEO

“It was a rather challenging class format” newly hired Dean of Students , Sonja Michelle L. Thomas, told. ”Moving from face to face instruction to internet based instruction with students from around the world is a very complex task. So far we proved that it could be done! Now that we have the initial classes out of the way, it's time to refine the process. Also, this should hopefully entice other designers  to jump on board as instructors now that we've proven the concept.”

John Elliott Young, Aircraft Painting Instructor and Director of Faculty Operations, also agrees to the point that FSDU is now ready to expand:

“I would like to extend an invitation to all who are interested in learning and/or teaching about Flight Simulator to join us in our quest for knowledge.  If you have a particular talent for some area of Flight Simulator that you would like to share, please contact me.  Is Flight Simulator a mystery to you? Would you like to learn how to enhance Flight Simulator to better your enjoyment of the program?

“Then maybe it's time to consider becoming a student at Flight Simulator Design University Online.   I have recently completed the first class at FSDUonline in Basic Aircraft Painting, and except for a few glitches I would say it was a great success.  My students came into the class with questions and left with answers.  All involved admitted gaining valuable knowledge and the practical skills they desired to have the ability to start painting aircraft and other models.

“In the next series of classes, we will be expanding the aircraft painting skill sets to involve even more manipulation of textures and effects.  Soon, I anticipate my students creating the sort of repaints that generate the high download numbers that mark the best quality repaints that we all see available on the net. Whether it's teaching or learning, or both, come on over to Flight Simulator Design University Online for a whole new dimension in the Flight Simulator experience.”

A centerpiece of FSDU online classes is a top of the line  software allowing every student to see in real time what the instructor is showing on screen, as well as allowing the teacher to see what the students are doing on their screens and correct it, if necessary, again in real time. While students and instructors talk and listen to each other, they can interact using their PC screen. Also available is a low cost client software that provides chat, file upload/download and many other useful features.

A student recently described it “Just like the teacher was sitting next to me while I make a plane model out of paper and he just points at the wing and says what must be corrected".

"When I first thought about taking classes here I feared anonymity and complicated file exchanges slowing down the learning process, but this fear turned out to be completely unjustified. A unique experience!”.

”As the number of students and teachers increases, we will soon be able to offer our various courses parallel at several times to make it more convenient to european, asian and african members of the flightsim community. Currently, we are also negotiating with european instructors.  There are also flight sim enthusiasts ready to spend their time from midnight to dawn in front their computers to help our University grow, sitting in front their computers somewhere in Germany, The Netherlands and Spain, and that is very encouraging.”, Mr Swagler added.
- END-

No offence but I think we have a pretty good university of design right here & also at FFDS. The advice is also freely given.

Personally, if I'm going to pay for a class, it's at least going to be an accredited college course. Wink

While the hobby is fortunate in having quite a number of people that are willing to share freely of their knowledge and time to help out others, I guess I do recognize that there are some who learn better with someone guiding them "in vivo".

Maybe I'm growing more mellow as I (allegedly) mature, but if I have a skill (teaching others modelling, etc) and I'm going to put myself through the straightjacket of setting up a formal "course" online, probably at odd hours, I would like to be compensated.  Also, by actually paying something, the 'student'  might be motivated to actually pay attention.

I think there's room for everyone at the table - just as there are good freeware and payware models.

Now, would *I* pay for modelling instruction?  Perhaps, If I commit to the time needed, that might be the way.  otherwise, like Hagar says, there are available resources - tutorials, forums, and people - that one can use.

sorry to bring up this topic.

Here's some doubts in my mind about this:

We don't actually get to see the instructors work, I think that would definitely aid to the selling point of this FSDU thing.

First of all the website annoys me, the images arent showing, if they cant produce a good website, as designers how can we trust there work. Secondly the constant sound annoys me, I know you can turn it off but so what.

Then, if they think I would pay a registration fee and then wait for them to contact me they have to be kidding! So far I would have nothing for my money.

I filled in the form just to see and the submit takes you to a dead link anyway.

No I wouldnt touch it far more to learn here and other forums for free.

hmmm....What the university doesn;t realize is; creating flight sim add ons is  a freeware community. Its awsome that people can download free software, get free help, and make free planes. This is why the community is so dam huge!I dont think that there gonna make any money attempting to sell something thats free.Maybe I'm wrong....
