As it stands, I can't use both computers.  When I have mine on, the other one (upon bootup) reports conflicting IP addresses (172.0....).  Can I change it?

you *have* to change one of the IP addresses.
pick one of the two pcs, go to network-properties-tcp/ip-properties and alter the last number of the x.x.x.x string representing the IP address so that it does not match the one on the other pc. don't pick 0,127 or 255; to be sure configure one PC as 1 and the other as 2
example
192.168.0.1
and
192.168.0.2
