Although most "boy bands" are pretty well on the gay side, there have been some good songs written and performed by the various "boy bands" over the years.

Depends what you call a "Boy Band". Most of the modern ones aren't bands at all as they usually sing & don't play instruments, not on the recordings anyway. What I call "Boy Bands" rarely write their own material & their hit recordings are usually rehashed old classics from years ago. They're pleasant enough to listen to but in most cases I prefer the originals. I can't see the point of making an almost exact duplicate, right down to the harmonies & arrangement. If there's something original about it - fine - but if not, why not re-release the original? Still, I don't expect the composers are too worried.

I suppose you could call most of the old Motown artists Boy Bands, the male ones anyway. How about the Four Seasons? Would they qualify? It's all music to me whatever else you like to call it. Good & bad in everything.

Good guitar solos means you have to learn to play the instrument, this is rare these days, most all the current "metal" bands or whatever genre name is attached to these new "heavy" bands play a few power chords, there are no solos because they don't know their instruments, there is little talent to speak of.

There's always been schlocky crapola music for the unsophisticated, and there always will be. Boy bands, the Simpson sisters (I can't stand either of 'em), that sort of thing... yawn!!  Who cares? Still plenty of incredible music out there, and with the state of technology now, there's more available now than ever before...

Actually I want bass solos (my instrument 8) )

But yeah not enough good stuff.

Oh yeah and I like dragonforce Ellwelnick if you like them I suggest you have a look at a band called Dreamtheater, preferably the albums Metropolis PtII or 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulance.

Of course they never beat best metal group of all time

RUSH (well at least they started of the kind of metal as we know it before they turned poppy in the 80's Smiley )

like all forms of music. There is a place for it. I know i wont be buying any of it, but its still gotta be bought by someone, or it wouldnt be around. Respect others likes and dislikes in music, as you would expect other people to respect your likes and dislikes.

Wasnt aiming to insult spitty, just a general comment aimed at no-one. There are people on the planet who insult others because they dont share the same music tastes. I think its sad that in such a diverse entertainment field that you get people like that.

I couldn't agree more Craig. There's a very wide range of music to choose from. Just because you happen to like one form doesn't make it any better or worse than another. Nor does it make you any better than the people who like the music you hate. Why do people insist on categorising these things? It's all music.  When I visit my local music store I'm never sure quite where to look for a particular artist or band. This usually comes down to which category the store owner decided to put it in - which is very often wrong to my way of thinking. This inverted snobbery has been going on since my young days & I thought it would have died out long ago. Young people seem generally far more tolerant now than they were 50 years ago, except for their tastes in music for some reason. If anything, the situation seems far worse now than it ever was. Roll Eyes

Maybe when you get a little older with broader tastes in the good things in life you won't feel so strongly about these things. Wink

PS. If nobody bought their recordings these "Boy Bands" couldn't possibly exist or last long enough to become millionaires. This must prove that there's plenty of people out there who like their music.

While on the subject of categories a thought just occurred to me. Back in the 60s there were two basic categories of what I'll call 'rock' music. These appealed to two types of people & a whole culture grew out of it. The two groups detested each other & their choice of music, the way they dressed, form of transport & everything else about them. There were battles between them whenever they met up, usually on a Saturday night in any town. The main "events" were the regular Bank Holiday outings in places like Clacton & Brighton & anyone caught up in it was likely to get hurt. I think this was a British phenomenon but was wondering which group you chaps would put yourselves in. Mods or Rockers. I suspect Mods myself. I'm sure most people have seen the film Quadrophenia & if not why not?

Maybe this deserves its own topic.
Quote:
Mods & Rockers

By 1964, the majority of British youth was split into two factions called Mods and Rockers who each dressed in their own distinctive style.

Mods were the smarter of the two and wore sharp lightweight suits or smart jackets over polo necks or Fred Perry shirts, and donned US Army Parkas to ride their Vespa and Lambretta scooters to a club to dance to black Soul music.

The Mods were originally an exclusive group of fashion-conscious men, but by 1963 the term 'Mod' had taken on a much looser meaning and could be applied to most tailored youth fashions of the period.

The Rockers wore winklepicker shoes, tight jeans and leather jackets with polished studs. They rode large motorcycles such as Triumphs, BSA's and Norton's (and had a greater affinity with motorbike grease than a tailor's measuring tape).

Every Saturday night the Mods and the Rockers would dress  themselves with great care, groom their hair so that not a strand was out of place, go out on the town and beat the sh1t out of each other.

The clashes between Mods and Rockers originally took place on Bank Holidays in seaside resorts such as Margate, Clacton and Brighton.

In May 1964, most major southern seaside resort in England were turned into a battlefield by the warring factions. Worst hit was Brighton where over 600 youths had to be controlled and 76 were arrested.

The violence, which included fist fights, bottle and stone throwing and general vandalism, terrified holidaymakers engulfed by the chaos. 51 youths were also arrested in Margate, where two teenagers were stabbed.

The Mods & Rockers are still around but they seem a tad more tolerant of each other these days. They're a lot older & a little more sensible now. I wouldn't go so far as to say they ever became friends. Wink

PS. Me? I kept out of it. I'm a born coward & never felt strongly enough about music to risk my life over it. Roll Eyes Wink

My top five 'Boy Bands' :

1) Metallica
2) Slayer
3) Iron Maiden
4) Megadeth
5) In Flames

I would get killed by any of those artists if I told them they were 'Boy Bands', but at the end of the day, they are.
Guys, instruments, music and money, make all of these 'Boy Bands' no?

As for this manufactured junk Undecided

lol I aint gonna answer that  Roll Eyes

But in regard to Doug's comment. Up until this last year I shared the veiw that any music outside of the little section of rock. Since joining a band however my musical tastes have broadened somewhat (To include such wonders as Creed, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Manic Street Preachers, Coldplay, Muse etc etc... ) I found that every person has a different taste and there is no objective good and bad withing music, you have to try and respect people's tastes. Once you got past that you can get back to normal band arguments (You know "Thats not being being played right", "Turn this up", "Your too load", "It goes to 11 thats more than 10 Wink " )

But I still stand by the idea that people and bands have to write their own music before I can respect it.

Sorry but I can't agree with this. Many of the most brilliant musicians in the world never wrote a single note of their own material. Composing & performing were separate skills until fairly recently & some of the best music ever written was by composers who couldn't play an instrument at all well & never set foot on a stage. The lyrics were very often written by someone else. In the case of popular music it was rare for musicians to write their own songs until the Beatles showed the way. After hearing some of the rubbish these groups come up with I'm not convinced that writing their own stuff is always such a good idea. Roll Eyes

Case in point: Carmina Burana/O fortuna.  One of the most famostesteses songs ever.  Seen in practically every type of commercial as well; pretty well known song despite it's age. Smiley

Also, I'm not sure about other countries, but I'm sure the American song "O Say Can You See" was composed of a song and a poem, they were combined later.  Perhaps you Britons could confirm/negate this for the U.K. and/or England?  I'm not big on British history so for all I know England, North Ireland, Scotland (?) etc. could all have there own anthems.  Beats the bejeezus out of me. Shocked

As far as music goes, I like a specific variant of every genre, but I've always had trouble on distinguishing between the myriad of variants (grunge, industrial, punk, hard, hardcore (open up any music player and you should see well over a hundred, perhaps 200) ), so I limit myself to the big ones: Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop, Country, Classical and Dance.  For each one I like a specific kind, such as funny Hip-Hop or militaristic Classical.  I try to keep an open mind but the barrage of assembly line music is more than patience can handle. Just to clarify this. The official national anthem of the UK (Britain) & the old British Empire is "God save the King/Queen". The Scots always hated it as the words were originally anti-Scots. The more offensive verses have since been removed. http://david.national-anthems.net/gb.htm

You might know it better as "My Country 'Tis of Thee" which is set to the same anonymous traditional melody. I never liked it much myself & find it terribly boring & depressing. I'm sure the separate countries in the UK have their own anthems although England never had one to my knowledge. I much prefer "Land of Hope & Glory", one of Edward Elgar's "Pomp & Circumstance" marches with words specially added by Arthur C. Benson at the request of Queen Victoria.

Here endeth your History lesson for today. Wink
