Quote:Also, I'm not sure about other countries, but I'm sure the American song "O Say Can You See" was composed of a song and a poem, they were combined later. Perhaps you Britons could confirm/negate this for the U.K. and/or England? I'm not big on British history so for all I know England, North Ireland, Scotland (?) etc. could all have there own anthems. Beats the bejeezus out of me.
Just to clarify this. The official national anthem of the UK (Britain) & the old British Empire is "God save the King/Queen". The Scots always hated it as the words were originally anti-Scots. The more offensive verses have since been removed.
http://david.national-anthems.net/gb.htmYou might know it better as "My Country 'Tis of Thee" which is set to the same anonymous traditional melody. I never liked it much myself & find it terribly boring & depressing. I'm sure the separate countries in the UK have their own anthems although England never had one to my knowledge. I much prefer "Land of Hope & Glory", one of Edward Elgar's "Pomp & Circumstance" marches with words specially added by Arthur C. Benson at the request of Queen Victoria.
Here endeth your History lesson for today.
