Nice MKXV1 (Read 1735 times)

Was reading the threads here about various spitfires and thought I'd drop this in for those of you who like to look at the shots and record the location.
This MkXV1 belongs to the Wanaka (N.Z.) Warbirds and is totally flyable. It served with 453 Squadron (RAAF) and was used in the film "Reach for the Sky."
Sorry about the quality of the shot, I have a very ordinary digital with a rather poor flash.
They also have a great Hawker Hurricane (P3351/DR393) one of the stated 10 left airworthy if anyone would like a shot of it.

Nice one Bazza. Nothing wrong with that shot. Taking pics of aircraft in hangars is not easy as I've discovered. Usually the lighting is all wrong to start with.
Right, now where's that Hurricane?

The Hurri isn't a glamour girl, its Quasimodos twin sister (and he got the looks)
I corrected my post - Spits, not Hurris, are glamour girls!

Nothing wrong with the Hurricane. Last in a long line of thoroughbreds.
Remember the sucessor to the Spitfire was the Attacker.

<G> Did the Spiteful ever make it to "real" service? The Attacker did.
Basically, the Attacker was a Spiteful/late Spitfire with a turbine engine in a new fuselage... definitely Supermarine's last gasp.
If I were to be asked for the most productive UK aircraft designer/manufacturer, I'd have to say that Hawkers would be, if not in first place, right up there.

sorry, I was being a pedantic g*t...
Now lets consider Hawker, with a rough history...
Hawker...
Tomtit, Fury (etc), Hart/Hind (etc), Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest, (Sea) Fury, Hunter, Harrier, Hawk, and that's just missing most of them out.
I always have thought the Henley looked quit nice too...

Sidney Camm, my hero. What a brilliant designer. proves that what looks right usually IS right.
There's some debate as to whether it's spelled Sydney.

I think this is what he's confessing to Felix. I would have kept quiet about that myself.
I trust that poor aeroplane is OK although I'm sure it's seen worse in its time. I suspect the poor old mechanics weren't too delighted. Just remember whose aeroplane it is. You're only allowed to borrow it & you're expected to look after it.

I have to admit, though, that while for a long time I've thought the Mark Vb to be one of the aesthetically pleasing Spitfire Marks, the XVI in that photo could make me consider being unfaithful to the Mark Vb.
However, I must remain true to the Fury/Nimrod Demon/Hind series...

I'm inclined to agree. I always liked the Mk IX/XVI though. In the end, I recall what John Romain told me last year when I asked which Mark was his favourite. He replied, with a grin on his face & that special gleam in his eye: "They're all beautiful."

Aesthetically speaking the IX/XVI series are the nicest I think although I break with tradition when I say that I prefer clipped wings to full span. The MkXIV is still the finest Spitfire of them all though

You forgot the Tornado. One of Camms less successful designs.
However, consider now that Hawker was the child of Sopwith and voila! You have yet another string of the finest fighters around!

I didn't want to bring that link about in case someone brought up the Cuckoo! But that had to be the "ugly duckling" in an otherwise stellar Sopwith lineup!

It was obviously to Sopwith what the Tornado was to Hawker then.

I believe the failure of the Tornado was due more to the powerplant than the airframe. The ill-fated Rolls-Royce Vulture. I don't think it was particularly ugly as it looked very much like the Typhoon.

Erm, maybe
It was ok, it was only a 180 rotation, and I was almost encouraged to do it in a way - I had a test pilot in the front who caught it for me. We spent 10 minutes just taxying around so I could get used to a taildragger...

I'm glad I'm a computer pilot and not a real life one. Many a time I've "landed" a perfectly functional Spit just to be a tad heavy on the brakes and tip over, or over-correct and do a beautiful ground loop, breaking bits and pieces all over (it's disgusting what some programs will make you sit through!)

What about the Scimitar?
"The lineage from the Spitfire is thus :- the Spitfire developed into the Spiteful; Spiteful wings were used for the Attacker; swept wings were added to the Attacker to produce the Swift. "
The Scimitar was Supermarine's last chance to get it right, but that airplane, too, was plagued with problems.

To add to Felix's comments. I was trying to point out the lineage of the Hawker aircraft. The Spitfire was a brand new design with no direct predecessor. The Hurricane was the final development of a successful line of military biplanes. The traditional fabric-covered steel tube construction meant it couldn't be developed further. The line started again with the Typhoon which was developed via the Tempest into the Sea Fury, one of the fastest piston-engined fighters ever to see service. The family resemblance is plain to see as with all Sidney Camm's designs. I don't think the Scimitar was a development of a previous design. It was not particularly successful. Unfortunately Supermarine never quite made it into the jet age.

Or was it...
"The lineage from the Spitfire is thus :- the Spitfire developed into the Spiteful; The Spiteful developed into the Seafang; Seafang wings were used for the Attacker; swept wings were added to the Attacker to produce the Swift, upon which someone moved the tailwheel to the wrong end. "

Ah, but did either see service? That is the point. Both the Spiteful & Seafang were actually developments of the Spitfire with a new laminar-flow wing. The Seafang was the naval version of the Spiteful, the same relationship as between the Spitfire & Seafire. If you wish to be pedantic I'm your man. I have years more experience.
Quote:

No doubt as they already incorporated the wing-fold mechanism. Pity they didn't think to move that tailwheel in the first place. It would almost certainly have been an improvement (let's face it you could hardly think of a worse idea than a tailwheel on a jet aircraft) & saved a lot of melted tarmac. Goodness knows what damage that blowlamp did to carrier decks. I doubt it would pass health & safety regulations these days.
Sorry but I always thought that Attacker was an 'orrible aeroplane. Not a fit successor to the beautiful, graceful Spitfire. Now, the Hawker Sea Hawk - that's a different story.
