Nice MKXV1 (Read 1731 times)

Was reading the threads here about various spitfires and thought I'd drop this in for those of you who like to look at the shots and record the location.

This MkXV1 belongs to the Wanaka (N.Z.) Warbirds and is totally flyable.    It served with 453 Squadron (RAAF) and was used in the film "Reach for the Sky."

Sorry about the quality of the shot, I have a very ordinary digital with a rather poor flash.

They also have a great Hawker Hurricane (P3351/DR393) one of the stated 10 left airworthy if anyone would like a shot of it.

Nice one Bazza. Nothing wrong with that shot. Taking pics of aircraft in hangars is not easy as I've discovered. Usually the lighting is all wrong to start with.

Right, now where's that Hurricane? Wink

The Hurri isn't a glamour girl, its Quasimodos twin sister (and he got the looks) Grin

I corrected my post  - Spits, not Hurris,  are glamour girls!

Nothing wrong with the Hurricane. Last in a long line of thoroughbreds. Tongue

<G>  Did the Spiteful ever make it to "real" service?  The Attacker did.

Basically, the Attacker was a Spiteful/late Spitfire with a turbine engine in a new fuselage... definitely Supermarine's last gasp.

If I were to be asked for the most productive UK aircraft designer/manufacturer, I'd have to say that Hawkers would be, if not in first place, right up there.

As Felix points out the Attacker was a Spiteful with a blowlamp blowin' instead of a fan up front pullin'. Wink 'orrible thing. Shocked

Grin sorry, I was being a pedantic g*t...

Now lets consider Hawker, with a rough history...

Hawker...

Tomtit, Fury (etc), Hart/Hind (etc), Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest, (Sea) Fury, Hunter, Harrier, Hawk, and that's just missing most of them out.

I always have thought the Henley looked quit nice too...

I knew that. You're as pedantic as me, well almost. I have years more experience. Tongue

Sidney Camm, my hero. What a brilliant designer. proves that what looks right usually IS right. Wink There's some debate as to whether it's spelled Sydney.

Hmm. It's gotta be a taildragger. Chipmunk? Unless it was something a tad rarer.

The Har-zard was the big clue... Wink

...and it was in full view of ATC, Ops, the lot!

Thankfully it was doing only about 10 knots...

I think this is what he's confessing to Felix. I would have kept quiet about that myself. Undecided

I trust that poor aeroplane is OK although I'm sure it's seen worse in its time. I suspect the poor old mechanics weren't too delighted. Just remember whose aeroplane it is. You're only allowed to borrow it & you're expected to look after it. Tongue Wink

I have to admit, though, that while for a long time I've thought the Mark Vb to be one of the aesthetically pleasing Spitfire Marks, the XVI in that photo could make me consider being unfaithful to the Mark Vb.

However, I must remain true to the Fury/Nimrod Demon/Hind series...
